{"id":258,"date":"2020-09-11T08:16:23","date_gmt":"2020-09-11T07:16:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.gov.scot\/building-standards\/?p=258"},"modified":"2020-09-11T08:16:23","modified_gmt":"2020-09-11T07:16:23","slug":"building-standards-workforce-strategy-blog-september-2020","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.gov.scot\/building-standards\/2020\/09\/11\/building-standards-workforce-strategy-blog-september-2020\/","title":{"rendered":"Building Standards Workforce Strategy Blog \u2013 September 2020"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>blog by Gordon Gilchrist<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Leading up to March this year, Building Standards Division was full steam ahead with preparations to launch the workforce strategy.\u00a0 So much work was in place to make sure the strategy would be ready for its planned launch at the end of May.\u00a0 Unfortunately, due to the COVID-19 pandemic we had to take the decision to postpone the launch.\u00a0 However, work to ensure the strategy is in the best place it can be has not stopped.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-268 alignleft lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/blogs.gov.scot\/building-standards\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/51\/2020\/09\/Worforce-strategy-2-300x216.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"216\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.gov.scot\/building-standards\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/51\/2020\/09\/Worforce-strategy-2-300x216.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.gov.scot\/building-standards\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/51\/2020\/09\/Worforce-strategy-2.jpg 352w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 300px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 300\/216;\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>One major achievement was the positive and constructive feedback we received from building standards staff and local authority HR leads on the strategy and what it aims to achieve.\u00a0 We received a full range of views and suggestions; all were appreciated and we have considered each one carefully.\u00a0 The final version has been influenced by these comments.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>We have also developed a project management approach to help organise delivery of the actions.\u00a0 We have created five core projects by identifying links in related actions.\u00a0 This progress has been accomplished by working together with Local Authority Building Standards Scotland (LABSS). Their input has been vital in the overall development of the strategy and how delivery will progress following the launch.<\/p>\n<p>Our main aim is that the strategy will enrich the profession for years to come.\u00a0 We will initially focus on two projects, Promoting the Building Standards Profession and Implementing the Competency Assessment System (CAS).\u00a0 We have taken this approach as we are fully aware of the impact the pandemic has had on every building standards team.\u00a0 The priority projects are achievable in the first year and will not over burden anyone with additional work.<\/p>\n<p>We will be writing to building standards teams shortly with information on the projects and the project management of them.\u00a0 Eventually, we will be looking for volunteers to help with delivery by getting involved in different parts of each project.<\/p>\n<p>As part of the promotion of the Building Standards Profession project we are planning to recruit local authority verifier staff members working in different roles to become Ambassadors of the profession.
