Child and Maternal Health
Update from Jane Grant – Launch of the Maternity Review, 20 January 2017
I am delighted to announce that we have concluded our Review of Maternity and Neonatal services across Scotland and the final report was presented to Ministers and will be published today. You can read a copy of the report and a short summary online.
I have highlighted in previous updates how important it was to me that the Review was grounded in the views of women and families who use these services and the professionals who deliver them. We therefore met with staff and local women in every Health Board area across the country as well as key voluntary organisations and professional bodies.
I have been hugely impressed with the commitment, dedication and expertise of the staff I have met and I would like to thank everyone who took the time to contribute to the Review process. We also heard from thousands of service users who shared their views and experiences through a series of focus groups held up and down the country, face-to-face meetings and an online survey. This feedback helped to identify the issues which matter most to women and their families and played a key role in shaping the report findings and recommendations.
The Review was also informed by the best available evidence which helped shape our proposals for how services should be designed and delivered in the future to meet the needs of women and newborn babies.
I am incredibly grateful for the contribution of the Review Group members who have given their time, their energy and enthusiasm and their expertise throughout the Review process. We have gone on an important journey together over the last 15 months and I am pleased that the final report truly reflects the wide range of views and contributions from Review Group members, staff and service users across Scotland.
It is important to remember that our maternity and neonatal services are already good and a credit to the staff who deliver them. This report aims to build on these strong foundations by describing a new vision and direction for maternity and neonatal services which will deliver an even better service for women, babies and families.
Although this report marks the end of this Review journey I know that many of you, including myself, will continue to be closely involved in taking forward this important work to develop services for women and babies across Scotland.
