{"id":1295,"date":"2017-04-05T13:41:57","date_gmt":"2017-04-05T13:41:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.gov.scot\/digital\/?p=1295"},"modified":"2017-04-05T17:38:19","modified_gmt":"2017-04-05T17:38:19","slug":"1295","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.gov.scot\/digital\/2017\/04\/05\/1295\/","title":{"rendered":"Collected points from diversity unconference and next steps"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>2\u00a0weeks ago today we ran an <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.gov.scot\/digital\/2017\/02\/13\/what-is-an-unconference\/\">unconference<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.gov.scot\/digital\/2017\/02\/13\/what-is-an-unconference\/\">on diversity in the Scottish digital sector<\/a> for public, private and third sector digital professionals. The discussions were fascinating, but too short according to attendees.<\/p>\n<p>As a result, we&#8217;ve set up a #scotdigidiversity slack group so that the cross sector digital community\u00a0now has a place to discuss ideas for how we create a more diverse digital sector and to figure out how to act on these ideas. If you&#8217;re not involved in this yet but want to be,\u00a0email <a href=\"mailto:Gary.Carmichael@gov.scot\">Gary.Carmichael@gov.scot<\/a> and he&#8217;ll get you added to this list.<\/p>\n<p>Rather than interpret what was said at the 5 discussions, we\u00a0held a sense making session last week where we\u00a0grouped the key points from each of the discussions into themes (please let us know if we&#8217;ve misinterpreted your point). Below we&#8217;ve published all of the points we captured\u00a0from each session. We haven&#8217;t edited these in the slightest &#8211; these are the thoughts of the attendees on the day as our notetakers caught them.<\/p>\n<p>Beside these thoughts, you&#8217;ll see an image of\u00a0a\u00a0Google form for each of the topics.\u00a0If you click on the image, you&#8217;ll be taken off to the form page. Less around the home may lead to less engagement<\/li>\n<li>Inability to practice skills learned via community at home<\/li>\n<li>Engagement through digital means exacerbates digital exclusion<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Support with life skills<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Shouldn&#8217;t need academic skills &#8211; but that requires more support (to engage &#8211; timing etc.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Recruitment<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Less requirements in job specs to make jobs less intimidating<\/li>\n<li>Different recruitment products<\/li>\n<li>Removal of academic standards for jobs<\/li>\n<li>Recruitment needs to change. Are uni degrees needed? Can we do blind recruitment based on skills not qualifications?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Perception<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>How do we make tech \/ education feel normal for kids from working class backgrounds?<\/li>\n<li>Having role models from different &#8216;class&#8217; backgrounds<\/li>\n<li>Not specific to &#8216;tech&#8217; though education (higher) and professional roles in general<\/li>\n<li>Prev. working class assoc. reception now changed<\/li>\n<li>Tech \/ digital seen as something for the elite and wealthy<\/li>\n<li>Think it links to a bigger issue in that people don&#8217;t know what jobs exist in digital and how<\/li>\n<li>Is digital worse than any other profession and so, how have we allowed it<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Teaching<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Does this come from society \/ education?<\/li>\n<li>Journey from non-higher education tech digital!<\/li>\n<li>Academic &#8216;tickboxes&#8217; misc. other skills &#8211; social media, overall tech comfort<\/li>\n<li>Internet safety, 2 year old, primary, feels, nursery<\/li>\n<li>Coding in schools tech companies branding out<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Apprenticeships<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Apprenticeships &#8211; lottery and nepotism?<\/li>\n<li>Modern apprenticeships &#8211; but also age gatekeeping<\/li>\n<li>They can use their skills (more and more apprenticeships)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Capabilities<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Our own inability to recognise talent &#8211; challenge our biases<\/li>\n<li>Need to hit the ground running &#8211; lower focus on training<\/li>\n<li>Hard for even us in the industry to think of what roles there are<\/li>\n<li>Skills shortage &#8211; businesses have a role to play<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0Where is funding for non-graduate pathways?<\/li>\n<li>Need to translate individual skills to digital roles<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Reality for business owners<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Hard to keep afloat as a small business (95%) &#8211; not blind to issue but hard to engage<\/li>\n<li>digital agencies have this too &#8211; middle class bias<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Changing career<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Don&#8217;t exchange anyone past young adult stage. YP (young people?) very good at consuming digitally but not creating\/producing!<\/li>\n<li>Why do we keep talking about digital natives? It adds barriers.<\/li>\n<li>Upskilling &#8211; ask kids what they want to learn<\/li>\n<li>Mixed levels and postcode lottery of ICT at primary school<\/li>\n<li>Empower digital leaders to work with kids (so the burden is not always on teachers)<\/li>\n<li>Reluctance to embrace GLOW for digital education<\/li>\n<li>The solution isn&#8217;t more computing teachers &#8211; needs to be built into everyone&#8217;s capability<\/li>\n<li>Perception is a need for more computing teachers<\/li>\n<li>Need for a &#8216;pre&#8217; CodeClan (digital academy)<\/li>\n<li>Teachers fear kids know more than them<\/li>\n<li>Are teachers given enough training to be confident in delivering digital?<\/li>\n<li>The &#8220;have nots&#8221; don&#8217;t have the devices to develop\/maintain their skills<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Start Earlier<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Earlier the better\u00a0 &#8211; opportunities in Tech (and wider STEM) need to be presented as options to all from nursery upwards<\/li>\n<li>Don&#8217;t miss the boat &#8211; automated curriculum tools (speech recognition, etc) causing issues (e.g. an increase in physical writing illiteracy)<\/li>\n<li>Start even before primary and address gender stereotypes<\/li>\n<li>Agree importance of starting young but must be a balance &#8211; younger people&#8217;s reliance on tech is already a concern<\/li>\n<li>STEM and digital should be started as early as possible<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;Baffled&#8221; it isn&#8217;t taught earlier in school<\/li>\n<li>STEM from nursery<\/li>\n<li>Goal setting is everyone&#8217;s job &#8211; not just schools&#8217;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Educating parents, teachers, and wider society<a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/forms\/d\/e\/1FAIpQLSejdADs7YHnW9pUPoTKR3X3ND3KbrW7_wb11wEV1nH42I56Kg\/viewform?usp=sf_link\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1309 alignright lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/blogs.gov.scot\/digital\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2017\/04\/starting-them-young-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"467\" height=\"789\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.gov.scot\/digital\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2017\/04\/starting-them-young-1.jpg 467w, https:\/\/blogs.gov.scot\/digital\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2017\/04\/starting-them-young-1-178x300.jpg 178w, https:\/\/blogs.gov.scot\/digital\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2017\/04\/starting-them-young-1-303x512.jpg 303w, https:\/\/blogs.gov.scot\/digital\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2017\/04\/starting-them-young-1-249x420.jpg 249w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 467px) 100vw, 467px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 467px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 467\/789;\" \/><\/a><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Business and education partnerships<\/li>\n<li>How digital industries liaise with education department to help shape curriculum<\/li>\n<li>Getting parents\/carers involved and interested &#8211; they are still the most important influencers for young children<\/li>\n<li>Teachers need education in using digital tools across subjects, and in understanding the career opportunities in tech and STEM<\/li>\n<li>Adults can learn &#8216;hard&#8217; skills &#8211; instil in kids the ability to think creatively<\/li>\n<li>Not just schools &#8211; community-led incentives to take burden off schools<\/li>\n<li>Not just schools!<\/li>\n<li>Enable sharing between students\/kids and teachers (often the kids can teach them!)<\/li>\n<li>Bring outside expertise in<\/li>\n<li>Parental\/societal fear about digital<\/li>\n<li>Tech savvy at a young age, e.g. buying programmes on Amazon<\/li>\n<li>Education for family\/community from media<\/li>\n<li>Educating parents about digital (preschoolers +)<\/li>\n<li>If teachers teaching it they are up to date with tech bring experts in (Are teachers up to date with tech? If not, bring experts in)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Creativity<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Importance of creativity, not just using technology<\/li>\n<li>Holistic view of tech &#8211; not just the hard skills, understanding and nurturing creativity<\/li>\n<li>It should be more general &#8211; logic\/reasoning not coding<\/li>\n<li>Creating spaces outside of the classroom where you can create and explore digitally<\/li>\n<li>Hard skills are easy to learn &#8211; creative thought\/thinking from an early age are key (not an answer to gender imbalance, but I don&#8217;t think the answer is just earlier)<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;palm of their hand&#8221; yet many kids not interested in how their devices work &#8211; could Apple etc do more when selling devices?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Role models<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Need to show young people what digital careers look like<\/li>\n<li>Strong role models from an early age to remove gender stereotypes<\/li>\n<li>Media image &#8211; tech is cool<\/li>\n<li>Media biggest influence &#8211; youtube, ads<\/li>\n<li>Girls feel that STEM subjects don&#8217;t have good role models &#8211; how to fix this?<\/li>\n<li>Need role models into education environment e.g. challenge the stereotypes as shown in the &#8220;draw a firefighter\/surgeon\/fighter pilot&#8221; video<\/li>\n<li>Kids are inherently sexist &#8211; need to change this by showing role models and different opinions<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Stereotypes<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Parents\/carers biggest influence<\/li>\n<li>Girlguiding research says 52% of 11-21 group think STEM is for boys &#8211; too late<\/li>\n<li>Tell our girls to be brave, strong, to believe<\/li>\n<li>Normalised through TV shows, games, books, apps, dolls, figures, etc<\/li>\n<li>Techie\/non-techie stereotypes<\/li>\n<li>Change\/stop early stereotypes<\/li>\n<li>Societal responsibility to remove ingrained stereotypes<\/li>\n<li>Gender stereotypes deeply ingrained &#8211; ads, etc<\/li>\n<li>STEM subjects are for boys &#8211; aargh<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Finance<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>No dedicated IT teacher or overlaps with responsibility for PCs &#8211; half of pcs don&#8217;t work. no budget.<\/li>\n<li>Budgeting &#8211; how can it be less of a lottery, less dependent on volunteers?<\/li>\n<li>Re-budgeting of IT early &#8211; primary schools<\/li>\n<li>Schools BYOD policies are different in 32 councils<\/li>\n<li>Connectivity issues for schools<\/li>\n<li>Teachers admin budgets due to curriculum for excellence issue will limit to digital<\/li>\n<li>Increase access to digital inclusion classes (i.e. how to use the technology)<\/li>\n<li>Can schools partner with industry e.g. Chromebooks in schools, etc.<\/li>\n<li>iPad per child is wrong &#8211;
