Ross has joined us from the University of Bath, where he headed up the <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20211201015357\/https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/digital\/\">team<\/a> transforming digital publishing and service delivery across the university. We\u2019re looking forward to hearing lots from Ross as he settles into our\u00a0team. Welcome aboard!<\/p>\n<h2>Update on\u00a0the last 100 days<\/h2>\n<h3>Content<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Justice \u2013 review and final iterations to Victims and Witnesses content following on from peer review \u2013 further content team research and ideation, incorporating a number of usability testing suggestions\u00a0<strong>\u2713<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Justice \u2013 Research and creation of content around eligibility and the application process for Legal Aid\u00a0<strong>\u2713<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Education \u2013 providing content to cover the school-leaver journey (applying for financial support and applying to higher education)\u00a0<strong>\u2713<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Business \u2013 discovery and production\u00a0of high-level exporting content including extensive collaboration with stakeholders in the Scottish business community, represented by the Customer Alignment Group\u00a0<strong>\u2713<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Housing \u2013 holding stakeholder planning workshops and writing content for buying, selling and building a house, including information on grants and help to buy schemes\u00a0<strong>\u2713<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>BAU \u2013 managing the content inbox, working with GOV.UK via Zendesk, creating a content mapping process, writing content based on enquiries to the\u00a0Central Enquiry Unit\u00a0<strong>\u2713<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h3>Publishing Platform features<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Adoption\u00a0of a tabbed interface on the content editing interface\u00a0<strong>\u2713<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Implementation of a markdown editor\u00a0<strong>\u2713<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Image and PDF storage \u2013 backend work complete, front-end work carried forward\u00a0<strong>\u2713<\/strong><strong>\u2717<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Notifications of expired content \u2013 expired content\u00a0displayed\u00a0in Publishing Platform interface, push notifications carried forward\u00a0<strong>\u2713<\/strong><strong>\u2717<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Creating Help and Support pages and linking them where relevant for gov.scot and mygov.scot\u00a0<strong>\u2717<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Implementation of new content formats for gov.scot\u00a0<strong>\u2713<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Design and implementation of UI \u2013 partially complete, carried forward.\u00a0<strong>\u2713<\/strong> <strong>\u2717<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>\u00a0Infrastructure<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Authentication refactor \u2013 carried forward\u00a0\u2717<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Digital style\u00a0guidelines<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Version 1 complete and online\u00a0<strong>\u2713<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Format review<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Carried forward as part of next phase of work\u00a0\u2717<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Usability and accessibility testing<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>gov.scot user testing, mygov.scot accessibility testing and Victims and Witnesses content testing\u00a0<strong>\u2713<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>User testing carried out on mobile devices for 50% of tests\u00a0<strong>\u2713<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>The next 100 days<\/h2>\n<p>In terms of what we\u2019re looking to achieve next, the five main areas of work are:<\/p>\n<h3>Publishing Platform features<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>There\u2019s a lot that we want to do to support the needs of users of the publishing platform and to better service the needs of users of our site. One big piece of work is to\u00a0aid the editorial workflow through the additional of new roles and privileges.<\/li>\n<li>Another area we want to sort out is the ability to link to content in a new way \u2013 at the moment we use the slug URL but sometimes content has to move around. Whenever content moves we need to go back and rework the links to that content \u2013 the next step will be to link to content by ID, allowing content to move without affecting links.<\/li>\n<li>On the flip side of maintaining links inside our site, we are also looking to improve the monitoring and tools around maintaining links out of from our site \u2013 often outside organisations make large structural changes to their sites and their content moves. We want to pick these changes up on a more routine basis as part of our day-to-day work and are looking to build a small feature around this.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Infrastructure<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>We have some ambitious goals around reworking our publishing platform\u2019s\u00a0authentication, maturing it to offer the features and tools required by a large publisher user base.<\/li>\n<li>We are also going to look\u00a0at how we can better surface content when a user searches within\u00a0our site. Recently there have been some niggles where the way some of our content formats are indexed hasn\u2019t allowed the content to appear as highly for some terms as we would like.<\/li>\n<li>Things in this digital world are changing and another area we\u2019re looking at is to stay current \u2013 one of the frameworks we use, Angular, has just moved on to a new version (2.0 is in Beta). We are going to look at what it will take to upgrade as part of our next batch of work.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Life events<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>One of the most powerful aspects of our site is the way we can help a visitor to a site in a time of need. For example, if you have just lost your job you might just\u00a0be\u00a0looking for one piece of content (information about your legal rights) but our site can surface different threads that become a part of that (debt, stress or mortgage advice). We are going to do some research around how we portray life events on the site, how users might want to interact with these, and how we can surface the right content in search.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Content<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Our content work roughly forms into two categories \u2013 business as usual on the work we\u2019ve already started and have in our pipeline, and the commitments that we\u2019ve taken on for new content. We\u2019ll share more about this content in the coming weeks.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Programme level work<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>We are going\u00a0to refine our process for getting links to our content.<\/li>\n<li>We are going\u00a0to refine how we are approaching\u00a0sites for decommissioning.<\/li>\n<li>We are going\u00a0to put in place a clear route for how we transition citizen-focussed gov.scot site content onto the mygov.scot site.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We\u2019ll update you on our work over the coming weeks.
