And with movements such as the Plain English Campaign attempting to change the way we create content for the better, it\u2019s our responsibility to help.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">We want to turn complex information into content that\u2019s easily understood by our audience. We believe information should be provided in the clearest and most accessible way possible, which is why we have \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/service-manual\/the-team\/content-designer.html\"><span class=\"s2\">content designers<\/span><\/a>\u2019 rather than \u2018content writers\u2019 in our teams.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Introducing guidance for content designers, in the form of a content style guide, is a great\u00a0way of promoting best practice, and bringing consistency across Scottish online public services when publishing on <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.mygov.scot\/\"><span class=\"s2\">mygov.scot<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Building on strong foundations<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">We have used the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/design-principles\/style-guide\"><span class=\"s2\">GOV.UK content style guide<\/span><\/a> as the starting point for our own, making use of it <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.mygov.scot\/\"><span class=\"s2\">within the alpha<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">There are a few reasons for this:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gds.blog.gov.uk\/about\/\"><span class=\"s2\">Government Digital Service (GDS)<\/span><\/a>\u00a0team has been publishing a wealth of research, testing and analysis as part of the creation of their content style guide<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">Our early thoughts include some\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/\"><span class=\"s2\">GOV.UK<\/span><\/a> content appearing on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.mygov.scot\/\"><span class=\"s2\">mygov.scot<\/span><\/a>, helping to create a more consistent user experience. Maintaining their style allows\u00a0things to stay consistent<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s3\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.business.scotland.gov.uk\/\"><span class=\"s4\">The Scottish business portal<\/span><\/a><\/span><span class=\"s1\"> aggregates a range of content from GOV.UK, so tone and style\u00a0passes over<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">Bringing simplicity to informational services provided by Government is key to GOV.UK, something we feel strongly about\u00a0as well<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>What goes into a content style guide?<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The content style guide covers the language and tone of voice to be used. This will help build trust and establish a relationship with users.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">We\u2019ve made some small changes to reflect the needs of\u00a0our team and other public bodies in Scotland. We have also included a little more detail around optimising content for Google (SEO).<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Notable areas include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">Accessibility principles<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">Writing for the web guidelines<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">Writing in plain English<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">Avoiding duplication<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The writing in plain English section is included to remind us that <a href=\"https:\/\/alpha.mygov.scot\/\"><span class=\"s2\">mygov.scot<\/span><\/a> is for everyone. Users don\u2019t stop understanding text because it\u2019s written clearly, but they might if we make it sound more confusing than it needs to.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>User needs don\u2019t mean creating more content<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Understanding user needs and how to meet each of these is important, as the answer won\u2019t always be to create more content.
