A hack day is a chance for us to work on some different projects that wouldn\u2019t be expected to\u00a0fall within our normal development process\u2026 and to work on these in an intense 2-day burst.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">This will let us try out some ideas as proof-of-concept \u2013 in our last hack days a few features were developed\u00a0that are now useful tools within our publishing platform. It\u2019s\u00a0a great chance for our team to break the normal flow of work and collaborate to realise fresh\u00a0ideas.<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1529 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/blogs.gov.scot\/digital\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2017\/07\/2015-04-16-10-54-37.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"726\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.gov.scot\/digital\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2017\/07\/2015-04-16-10-54-37.jpg 450w, https:\/\/blogs.gov.scot\/digital\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2017\/07\/2015-04-16-10-54-37-186x300.jpg 186w, https:\/\/blogs.gov.scot\/digital\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2017\/07\/2015-04-16-10-54-37-317x512.jpg 317w, https:\/\/blogs.gov.scot\/digital\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2017\/07\/2015-04-16-10-54-37-260x420.jpg 260w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 450px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 450\/726;\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>What do you need for a hack day?<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">A venue and attendees (we\u2019re using our office)<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">Refreshments (we\u2019re right above the canteen and we\u2019ll all have a trip to the pub at the end of\u00a0day 2)<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">Wifi (always useful!)<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">Judging<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">A prize!<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>What are we going to be working on?<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Of the 30 or so ideas\u00a0that were proposed 5 were carried forward:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">Rich Search \u2013 pulling rich content right into site-search pages (examples include playable videos, maps and quick answer style date information)<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">Intelligent 404 \u2013 if you mistype a URL then you\u2019ll see a 404 page \u2013 improving this by\u00a0dynamically showing pages which closely match the URL that you typed<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">Office timelapse \u2013 more of a fun project to capture the flow of people around the office and the life cycle of our Kanban boards<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">Improving local authority pages\u00a0\u2013 what publicly available data can we pull in to show on local authority pages e.g. maps, population<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">Rich content checker \u2013 when content writers use the Publishing platform\u00a0is there a way to\u00a0automatically provide\u00a0spell-checking and phrase-checking?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Stay tuned for day two of the hackathon or follow our progress via <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/mygovscot\"><span class=\"s3\">@mygovscot<\/span><\/a>!<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This is a post by Jono Ellis, our\u00a0Social Media\u00a0Manager What is a hack day?
