In the office we are already using Agile practices and we run all our work through our Kanban board \u2013 we\u2019ve mentioned both Agile and Kanban before but it\u2019s a good idea to remind ourselves what they are:<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Agile software development<\/b> is a group of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Software_development_methodologies\"><span class=\"s2\">software development methods<\/span><\/a> in which requirements and solutions evolve through collaboration between self-organising, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cross-functional_team\"><span class=\"s2\">cross-functional teams<\/span><\/a>. It promotes adaptive planning, evolutionary development, early delivery, continuous improvement, and encourages rapid and flexible response to change. \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Agile_software_development\"><span class=\"s2\">Wikipedia<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>The Kanban Method<\/b>\u00a0(\u770b\u677f) (literally sign or large visual board in Kanji) is a management method for:\u00a0improving service delivery,\u00a0catalysing improvements and\u00a0evolving the business model to be fit-for-purpose \u2013 Lean Kanban<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1542 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/blogs.gov.scot\/digital\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2017\/07\/20150310_085315-animation.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"395\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 700px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 700\/395;\" \/><!--more--><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The animation above shows what this means on a day to day basis \u2013 features, bugs, technical changes and content all get cards or sticky notes and those items progress onto and then along the Kanban board as work progresses, eventually dropping off when that item is added to the live site. To us Agile and Kanban are more than just a board on a wall and a few rituals \u2013 it is a way of making better decisions, improve our collaboration, deliver more value and increase the quality of our product \u2013 so here are a few different takes on the recent learnings:<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>What was the big idea?<\/b> Modern software development has been suffering by operating in a mode of production rooted in manufacturing, which doesn\u2019t work [<i>for knowledge work<\/i>]. We need a new method.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>What was your big surprise?<\/b> A survey of software development that illustrated the amount of features created that were never used.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>What\u2019s your big question?<\/b> Convert theory to practise \u2013 how?<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u2013 Peter Smith, Product Owner<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>What was the big idea?<\/b> Equip me with new skills so that I can contribute better to the programme.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>What was your big surprise?<\/b> Working towards deadline can create waste \u2013 if you finish early you could end up with waste [<i>e.g. extra features or gold-plating<\/i>] trying to deliver at the right time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>What\u2019s your big question?<\/b> How to create a feedback loop early enough to avoid delivering what is not needed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u2013 Raphael Chinwuba, Business Analyst<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>What was the big idea?<\/b>\u00a0Getting people to think about a different way of working and how best to deliver something of value to citizens as early as possible.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>What was your big surprise?<\/b>\u00a0Touching upon the history of manufacturing through comparing the idea of people on a production line and people as master craftsman.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>What\u2019s your big question?<\/b>\u00a0It has made me want to explore new methods of working in more detail \u2013 including getting involved in initiatives like\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.responsive.org\/\"><span class=\"s2\">responsive.org\/<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u2013 Calum Shepherd, Head of Digital Strategy<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>What was the big idea?<\/b> The organisation needs to change. Adopting Agile thinking\u00a0can enable quality, better flow and added value.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>What was your big surprise?<\/b> What matters is not delivering \u201con time\u201d but speed of delivery. Getting my head around for clients\/customers delivering on time shouldn\u2019t be a key deliverable. The assumption is almost \u201cwe know better\u201d. Really interested to appreciate how we do this in relation to the \u201cQuality, Flow, value\u201d arena. Looking forward to working through it!<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>What\u2019s your big question?<\/b> Question the attitude that all other methodologies are wrong and project have failed because they were waterfall.
