Every second Friday the team comes together for a product demo, giving us an opportunity to sit down and talk about what\u2019s in the latest release. <\/span><\/p>\n

Here is what we covered this week:<\/span><\/p>\n

Improving content states<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

As the needs of our content team have matured\u00a0we have adapted and improved the\u00a0publishing system. The changes being demoed today included a enhancement\u00a0to the states for content items. Content items could previously be either unpublished or published \u2013 now content moves through a workflow with a series of states. These are\u00a0authoring, awaiting peer-review, peer-review, awaiting fact-checking, fact-checking, ready for publishing, published, unpublished.<\/span><\/p>\n

These new content states tie in with roles that people pick up\u00a0and improve the publishing tool to fit in with our existing process.<\/span><\/p>\n

Improvement in our analysis capabilities<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Our newest\u00a0member of the team Dan took the helm of Google Analytics and talked through\u00a0off our recent growth and traffic\u00a0sources. This included how traffic from search has changed\u00a0during the\u00a0decommissioning of DirectScot<\/span><\/a>. Users initially arrived\u00a0at\u00a0www.mygov.scot<\/span><\/a>\u00a0through redirected URLs, but this changed to direct traffic as search engines begun swapping out old pages and serving the new pages on\u00a0www.mygov.scot<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ability to edit live content & push button site publish<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Until now the site publishes content twice daily,\u00a0but there was a need to be able to do more here \u2013 firstly to edit pages without having to un-publish them and secondly for the content team to be able to manually publish pages on demand. We tackled both of these in this release.<\/span><\/p>\n

Introducing bulk editing<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Recent changes to content items highlighted the need to be able to quickly edit the same\u00a0section of many pages in one go. So, we built\u00a0a bulk edit tool! The bulk editing tool\u00a0pulls in the meta data from our content items (e.g. title, description, slug) and allows bulk editing of\u00a0each field. This will vastly improve the time it takes to make a systematic change to the same meta data\u00a0across the site. The tool allows you to\u00a0filter and reorder columns and all edits are auto-saved.<\/span><\/p>\n

Improving site-search<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

We make use of Elastic Search for site-search. It has a bunch of great features and we\u2019ve been\u00a0working on assessing, building, styling and testing new features for this release. Tim, our software engineer, showed us; search results appearing as you type, \u201cdid you mean?\u201d suggestions for misspellings and highlighting\u00a0search terms within the search results. These features were not\u00a0available\u00a0straight out of the box so it\u2019s been great to see the search tool be improved upon.<\/span><\/p>\n
