{"id":4358,"date":"2022-07-11T13:39:01","date_gmt":"2022-07-11T13:39:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.gov.scot\/digital\/?p=4358"},"modified":"2022-07-11T13:39:01","modified_gmt":"2022-07-11T13:39:01","slug":"scottish-governments-design-system-user-feedback","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.gov.scot\/digital\/2022\/07\/11\/scottish-governments-design-system-user-feedback\/","title":{"rendered":"Scottish Government&#8217;s Design System \u2013 user feedback"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Blog by Anusree Raju, Head of Practice for Interaction Design, Digital Directorate.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/designsystem.gov.scot\/\">Scottish Government&#8217;s Design System<\/a> team and Payments Service design team have been working closely for the launch of their new Payments Service.<\/p>\n<p>The Scottish Government&#8217;s Design System is also known as Digital Scotland Design System.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Inclusive testing<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Recently, the Payments Service team completed inclusive testing on their service which has been using the Scottish Government Design System standards. The aim was to understand how accessible the task-based navigation and visual design is for the Payments Service.<br \/>\nFive citizen volunteers took part in the moderated usability testing and interviews during June 2022 to find out what it was like to use the service with:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A visual impairment<\/li>\n<li>Limited colour perception<\/li>\n<li>Dyslexia and\/or Dyscalculia<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The volunteers used a variety of adaptive strategies, including text-to-speech software, keyboard navigation, screen filters and a magnifying glass. They mapped to Levels 7, 8 and 9 of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/government-digital-inclusion-strategy\/government-digital-inclusion-strategy#annex-2-digital-inclusion-scale-for-individuals\">GOV.UK Digital Inclusion scale<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Design System user insights<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The overall impressions and feedback of the inclusive testing have been very positive.<\/p>\n<p>Following are some of the user quotes shared by Payments Service highlighting Design System insights:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>&#8220;This is more usable than I expected from a Scottish Government portal&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;It looks new and fresh and user friendly&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;This page would be easy to use as someone who has visual impairment&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;It&#8217;s really easy to see what&#8217;s going on, I don&#8217;t need my magnifying glass&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;Clear to see everything\u2026 Good sizing&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Referring to the Design System <a href=\"https:\/\/designsystem.gov.scot\/styles\/states\/\">focus states<\/a> and styles used for example <a href=\"https:\/\/designsystem.gov.scot\/styles\/colour-palette\/\">colours<\/a>, the participants in the inclusive testing gave positive feedback which helped in making Payments Service accessible.<\/p>\n<p>Special thanks to Payments team for sharing these valuable insights.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Get in touch!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you want to get involved in using the design system or are interested in collaborating to add new styles, components, or patterns, please contact the team at <a href=\"mailto:designsystem@gov.scot\">designsystem@gov.scot<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Recently, the Payments Service team completed inclusive testing on their service which has been using the Scottish Government Design System standards.
