Have you ever wondered what all this talk about Scotland\u2019s \u201cDigital Strategy\u201d actually means for you? Maybe you\u2019ve seen in the series of blogs<\/a>\u00a0from my colleagues mentioning how COSLA, the Digital Office, and the Scottish Government have teamed up to shape a new approach and how \u201cco-design\u201d (which simply means building things together with the people who use them) is right at the heart of it.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

But let\u2019s be honest, if you\u2019re not a techie or part of the so-called \u201cdigital public sector diaspora\u201d, you might be thinking, \u201cWhat does this Digital Strategy refresh really mean for me? Why should I care?\u201d That\u2019s exactly what I want to explain here, in plain English so everyone can see what\u2019s changing, and how it could make life better for all of us.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Because let\u2019s face it, nobody enjoys filling out forms or chasing paperwork. We all just want public services that work smoothly, with as little hassle as possible. That\u2019s what Scotland\u2019s new Digital Public Services Plan is all about. So, what\u2019s really changing, and why does it matter? I hope this blog gives you a clear, down-to-earth answer.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Why are we doing this?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Life\u2019s busy enough. Whether you\u2019re booking a GP appointment, paying your council tax, or applying for a school place, you want it to be quick, easy, and secure. This plan is about making public services as simple and reliable as your favourite online shop or banking app. It\u2019s about saving you time, reducing stress, and making sure everyone gets the help they need, when they need it.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What\u2019s actually going to change?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Less Duplication, More Teamwork –\u00a0<\/strong>Instead of every council and government department doing their own thing, we\u2019re joining forces. That means sharing what works, cutting out waste, and making sure money is spent where it matters most on services that help you.<\/span><\/p>\n

One-Stop Digital Services –\u00a0<\/strong>Imagine logging in once and getting access to everything you need\u2014council services, health appointments, official messages all in the one place. No more juggling passwords or repeating your details over and over. That\u2019s the goal.<\/span><\/p>\n

Smarter Use of Your Information –\u00a0<\/strong>We\u2019re making it so you only have to tell your story once. Your information will be used (safely and ethically) to make services more personal and responsive. And don\u2019t worry privacy and security are always top priorities.<\/span><\/p>\n

Better Skills for Public Sector Staff –\u00a0<\/strong>We\u2019re helping public sector workers get up to speed with the latest digital skills. That means better, faster service for you, and staff who are confident using new technology.<\/span><\/p>\n

Trying Out New Ideas –\u00a0<\/strong>We are trying out new things, like smart sensors in buildings, wearable health technology to help with independent living with support, drones to deliver school meals or check for storm damage, and even virtual reality for planning or learning. We are also looking how artificial intelligence can help with better outcomes and efficiencies. <\/span>But we’ll work hard to use these technologies in the most fair and responsible way<\/span>, making sure they are safe and respect your privacy. Most importantly, we\u2019ll only use these ideas if they truly make life easier and help services run better for everyone. If it doesn\u2019t help people or save time and money, we won\u2019t do it.<\/span><\/p>\n

Stronger Cyber Security –\u00a0<\/strong>With more services online, we\u2019re doubling down on keeping your data safe. That means regular training, better sharing of information about threats, testing our resilience plans and clear plans for what to do if something goes wrong.<\/span><\/p>\n

Digital Inclusion: No One Left Behind –\u00a0<\/strong>Plus of course something that\u2019s really important, we know not everyone is online, or confident with technology. Digital inclusion is at the heart of this plan. That means:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
