{"id":585,"date":"2015-09-11T09:54:00","date_gmt":"2015-09-11T09:54:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.scotland.gov.uk\/digital\/?p=585"},"modified":"2018-02-19T15:50:01","modified_gmt":"2018-02-19T15:50:01","slug":"supporting-scotlands-businesses","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.gov.scot\/digital\/2015\/09\/11\/supporting-scotlands-businesses\/","title":{"rendered":"Supporting Scotland\u2019s businesses"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Over the last 100 days, we\u2019ve been finalising what\u2019s needed to <a href=\"http:\/\/inside.mygov.scot\/2015\/05\/11\/introducing-a-simple-helpful-tool-for-decommissioning-websites\/\">close<\/a> the Scottish Business Portal and move the website\u2019s content and tools on to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mygov.scot\/\">mygov.scot<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The portal (business.scotland.gov.uk) was originally designed to bring business service and support information into one place \u2013 pulling content via an API from partner websites like\u00a0Business Gateway, Scottish Enterprise, Highlands &amp; Islands Enterprise, Skills Development Scotland and GOV.UK. It also hosted interactive tools to calculate business rates and access funding opportunities.<\/p>\n<p>This will now be taken forward within mygov.scot and the mygov team is, therefore, keen to work with business stakeholders and users to ensure that the content is kept up-to-date, continuously improved and is responsive to the needs of Scottish business users. We\u2019ll also be using analytics to help us make design decisions to improve the user experience.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What does this mean for you?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A banner is now on the portal to announce its closure on 14 September. To further support users, we\u2019re directing the high traffic pages to equivalent information on the mygov.scot website.<\/p>\n<p>While the URL\u00a0redirects to mygov.scot will make sure there are no broken links for users when we switch off the portal, we are asking our partners who currently link to the business portal to review and update their links to the new pages on mygov.scot. The benefit of this will be a clearer journey for users \u2013 knowing where the link is taking them \u2013 and the pages will load quicker.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How we transferred the content<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We transferred the portal\u2019s content to mygov.scot in 3 stages:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>tools, high demand and unique content (including the funding opportunities tool and the business rates calculator)<\/li>\n<li>Scottish business support services<\/li>\n<li>GOV.UK content (for example tax advice from HMRC)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As part of this transfer (which was helped massively by our <a href=\"http:\/\/inside.mygov.scot\/2015\/08\/04\/content-rally\/\">content rally<\/a>), we reviewed the content and its usability before showing our key partners our progress and what the decommissioning process would involve.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How we improved the business rates calculator<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mygov.scot\/business-rates-calculator\/\">business rates calculator<\/a>\u00a0is one of the most visited sites on the portal. We gathered ideas from stakeholders and fully tested proposed changes with real users, ensuring our improvements enhanced their experience of the calculator. The business rates calculator now:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>has been optimised for tablet and mobile use<\/li>\n<li>displays \u2018what you need to know\u2019 information upfront before starting the calculator<\/li>\n<li>is easier to find online with its own page and listing on mygov.scot<\/li>\n<li>has no loss of navigation or content if the \u2018back\u2019 button is used<\/li>\n<li>allows search results to be emailed to support use on smartphones<\/li>\n<li>provides direct access to relevant council website pages with the new local authority finder<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>The next 100 days<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Our next phase of work will focus on the experience of business users looking to export. This will allow us to further implement our content strategy which puts users before organisations and services, with a clear focus on journeys and tasks to develop our understanding of complex needs.<\/p>\n<p>We are collaborating with key partners across the business sector to understand the landscape of existing services, who their users are and to share outputs such as user research.
