More\u00a0than\u00a0just\u00a0broadband<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

When people ask me what I do,\u00a0and what my team leads on, they\u00a0tend to think about\u00a0broadband.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

But\u00a0digital connectivity\u00a0is much bigger than that.\u00a0It is one of the foundations on which modern Scotland relies. Every day, millions of us rely on digital infrastructure without ever giving it a second thought.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Every video call, online purchase, card payment, train journey, business\u00a0transaction\u00a0and digital public service depends on a complex network of infrastructure working behind the scenes. Fibre cables, mobile networks, wireless technologies,\u00a0satellites\u00a0and data centres all play a role in keeping Scotland connected. Most of us never see this infrastructure, but Scotland depends on it every day.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Digital connectivity is now\u00a0as essential to Scotland\u2019s future as our tra<\/span>nsport\u00a0networks, energy\u00a0system\u00a0and water infrastructure. It supports economic growth, enables businesses to innovate and compete, and helps attract investment into Scotland. But its importance goes even further.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Connectivity is a fundamental enabler of both Scotland’s\u00a0<\/span>Public Service Reform Strategy<\/span><\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0<\/span>Digital Strategy for Scotland<\/span><\/a>,\u00a0supporting more accessible,\u00a0responsive\u00a0and efficient public services. It enables everything from online healthcare and education services to modernised public sector operations, data-driven\u00a0decision-making\u00a0and digital inclusion. It also helps tackle geographic inequality, supports rural sustainability and strengthens Scotland’s resilience in an increasingly digital world.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A digital ecosystem, not a single network<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

It\u2019s\u00a0helpful to remember that connectivity\u00a0isn’t\u00a0a single technology,\u00a0<\/span>but rather a range of technologies that serve\u00a0different needs\u00a0and scenarios.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Fibre networks provide the backbone. They enable the high-capacity, reliable connections that businesses, schools, hospitals, public\u00a0services\u00a0and households rely on every day. From supporting remote and hybrid working to enabling advanced digital services, fibre creates the foundation that much of the modern economy is built on.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Mobile networks are another essential part of the picture. Reliable 4G and 5G coverage allows people and organisations to stay connected wherever they are. For businesses, this means greater productivity and flexibility. For emergency services and public sector organisations, it means reliable communications when they matter most.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>For communities, it means better access to services,\u00a0information\u00a0and opportunities, helping to reduce digital exclusion and improve quality of life.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Scotland’s geography also means that\u00a0different places\u00a0need different solutions. Fixed wireless technologies can deliver cost-effective broadband in areas where fibre is difficult to deploy, while Low Earth Orbit satellites can provide connectivity to some of the country’s most remote communities.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Increasingly, data centres and edge computing facilities provide the computing power that underpins cloud services, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the digital economy.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

No single technology\u00a0provides\u00a0every answer.\u00a0Different places, different\u00a0communities\u00a0and different businesses have\u00a0different needs. Our job is to ensure these technologies work together to create a resilient, future-proofed digital infrastructure for Scotland.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Turning investment into impact<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

Scottish Government-led programmes are ensuring that all of Scotland can access this infrastructure \u2013 building on the significant commercial investment that\u00a0we\u2019ve\u00a0seen over the past two decades.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The impact of this\u00a0investment is already being seen\u00a0<\/span>across Scotland<\/span><\/a>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Today, 97% of premises can access superfast broadband, while full fibre coverage has increased\u00a0<\/span>from 18% in 2021 to 79%<\/span><\/a>. Mobile connectivity has also expanded significantly, with\u00a0<\/span>99% of the population covered by 4G and 95% by 5G<\/span><\/a>\u00a0\u2013\u00a0covered by at least one operator.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Those figures matter but they are not the ultimate measures of success. The real measure is what they unlock.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It means businesses can reach customers around the world from every part of Scotland, adopt\u00a0new technologies,\u00a0and improve productivity. It allows public services to be delivered more efficiently, helping organisations redesign services around people’s needs and take advantage of digital innovation. For individuals, it means easier access to work, education, healthcare,\u00a0entertainment\u00a0and everyday services, regardless of where they live. It helps communities remain sustainable and attractive places to live and work, while strengthening Scotland’s ability to compete for future investment,\u00a0innovation\u00a0and jobs.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Much of this progress has come from targeted public investment in areas where commercial deployment alone would never have reached. Through programmes such as\u00a0<\/span>Reaching 100%\u00a0(R100)<\/span><\/a>,\u00a0<\/span>Project Gigabit in Scotland<\/span><\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0<\/span>Scottish 4G Infill programme<\/span><\/a>, government and industry have worked together to extend high-quality connectivity into some of the most challenging parts of the country.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Delivering connectivity in partnership<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

The scale of Scotland’s digital connectivity ambitions means that collaboration is not\u00a0just important,\u00a0it is essential.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

No single organisation can deliver the infrastructure, investment and innovation\u00a0required\u00a0to connect every part of the country. Improving connectivity across Scotland depends on strong partnerships between government, industry, regulators, local\u00a0authorities\u00a0and delivery partners.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Industry provides the\u00a0expertise\u00a0and investment to build and\u00a0operate\u00a0networks. Local authorities help unlock delivery on the ground. Regulators create the conditions for competition and investment. The Scottish and UK Governments work together to design the programmes that target public investment where it can have the greatest impact,\u00a0and we are supported by organisations like the\u00a0<\/span>Scottish Futures Trust<\/span><\/a>, who are helping explore how emerging wireless technologies can solve future connectivity challenges.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Each partner brings something different. Together, they are helping design and deliver the infrastructure that will serve Scotland for decades to come.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Why connectivity matters<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

The likelihood is that digital connectivity will get even more important in the years ahead \u2013 as public services become more digital,\u00a0as businesses adopt AI and data-driven technology,\u00a0and as Scotland competes on the global stage.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Recent events have also reminded us that resilience matters every bit as much as coverage. We often only notice the extent to which our communities rely on digital connectivity when something goes wrong.\u00a0All it takes is a subsea cable fault, or a power failure, and some of the things that people take for granted are\u00a0impacted. So, protecting the networks we all depend upon \u2013 strengthening resilience and ensuring communities\u00a0remain\u00a0connected\u00a0\u2013\u00a0will become an increasingly important part of the work ahead.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

That means continuing to invest in the right mix of technologies, supporting\u00a0innovation\u00a0and creating the conditions that encourage long-term private investment alongside public funding.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What keeps Scotland connected\u00a0isn’t\u00a0one technology, one network or one programme.\u00a0It’s\u00a0an entire digital ecosystem working together behind the scenes\u00a0\u2013\u00a0connecting people, supporting businesses, enabling public\u00a0services\u00a0and creating opportunities across the country.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Most of us never think about the fibre beneath our feet, the mobile mast on top of a hill or the data centre processing information behind the scenes. But we\u00a0benefit\u00a0from them every single day.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

And\u00a0that’s\u00a0the real story of connectivity: not simply getting online, but creating the foundations for a stronger economy, better public services, thriving communities and a more prosperous Scotland where opportunity is not limited by geography.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As Scotland continues to deliver its ambitions through the\u00a0Digital Strategy for Scotland\u00a0and the Public Service Reform Strategy, connectivity will remain one of the critical enablers of change. It is the infrastructure that allows innovation to happen, services to evolve and opportunities to reach every corner of the country.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Getting that right will be a key part of Scotland\u2019s future story.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
