{"id":668,"date":"2022-08-02T11:04:34","date_gmt":"2022-08-02T10:04:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.gov.scot\/funeral-industry\/?p=668"},"modified":"2022-08-02T11:09:05","modified_gmt":"2022-08-02T10:09:05","slug":"provisional-bookings-for-burial-or-cremation-prior-to-registration-of-death","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.gov.scot\/funeral-industry\/2022\/08\/02\/provisional-bookings-for-burial-or-cremation-prior-to-registration-of-death\/","title":{"rendered":"Provisional Bookings for Burial or Cremation Prior to Registration of Death"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A Certificate of Registration of Death (\u2018Form 14\u2019) is required under section 27A of the Registration of Births, Deaths and Marriages (Scotland) Act 1965 before a burial or cremation can take place in Scotland.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Under the 1965 Act, it is the responsibility of burial and cremation authorities to ensure the appropriate paperwork has been received to allow a funeral to take place and it is an offence under the 1965 Act to proceed without the Form 14.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>However, provisional bookings for burials or cremations can be made before the Form 14 is available. A letter was issued from us in 2015 confirming this and you can read that letter here:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.gov.scot\/funeral-industry\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/54\/2022\/08\/Funeral-Industry-Subgroup-Letter-to-Burial-Authorities-re-Form-14-Policy-PDF.pdf\">Funeral Industry Subgroup &#8211; Letter to Burial Authorities re Form 14 Policy &#8211; PDF<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Authorities continue to have discretion to allow provisional bookings which can help provide clarity and minimise distress to the bereaved.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Communication between funeral directors and authorities at the time of booking continues to be of paramount importance.
