{"id":11791,"date":"2021-05-24T11:11:09","date_gmt":"2021-05-24T10:11:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.gov.scot\/marine-scotland\/?p=11791"},"modified":"2021-05-24T12:17:50","modified_gmt":"2021-05-24T11:17:50","slug":"american-lobsters-in-scottish-waters","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.gov.scot\/marine-scotland\/2021\/05\/24\/american-lobsters-in-scottish-waters\/","title":{"rendered":"Retain and report American lobster"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A campaign has launched to help raise awareness of <span style=\"color: #1f3864\">American lobster <\/span>(Homarus americanus)<i>.<\/i><\/p>\n<p>The animals are considered as an <span style=\"color: #1f3864\">invasive non-native species as they are not indigenous to Scotland and they pose a threat to the native wildlife. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #1f3864\">Every year <\/span><span style=\"color: #203864\">Marine Scotland and other UK administrations <\/span>receive a small number of reports of American lobster being caught in <span style=\"color: #44546a\">UK<\/span> waters. <span style=\"color: #1f3864\">\u00a0<\/span>These animals cannot cross the Atlantic naturally and therefore have appeared because people have <span style=\"color: #1f3864\">released them, <\/span>either deliberately or accidentally.<\/p>\n<p>Marine Scotland is calling on people to report any American lobsters caught in our waters to have a true picture of where the animals are, in what quantities and if they are breeding.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Identification<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>American lobsters are similar to European lobsters in appearance but there are some noticeable differences:<\/p>\n<h4><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-11799 aligncenter lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 671px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 671\/590;font-weight: 400\" data-src=\"https:\/\/blogs.gov.scot\/marine-scotland\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2020\/10\/American-lobster.png\" alt=\"American lobster characteristics\" width=\"671\" height=\"590\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.gov.scot\/marine-scotland\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2020\/10\/American-lobster.png 871w, https:\/\/blogs.gov.scot\/marine-scotland\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2020\/10\/American-lobster-300x264.png 300w, https:\/\/blogs.gov.scot\/marine-scotland\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2020\/10\/American-lobster-768x675.png 768w, https:\/\/blogs.gov.scot\/marine-scotland\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2020\/10\/American-lobster-582x512.png 582w, https:\/\/blogs.gov.scot\/marine-scotland\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2020\/10\/American-lobster-478x420.png 478w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 671px) 100vw, 671px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" \/><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>American lobsters are more stocky in appearance than European lobsters<\/li>\n<li>Colouration varies but American lobsters are usually green\/brown with orange, red, dark green or black speckling, while European lobsters are blue in colour<\/li>\n<li>The underside of the claws of an American lobster are orange, while those of a European lobster are cream coloured<\/li>\n<li>American lobsters have one or more spines\u00a0(ventral teeth) on the underside of the \u2018nose\u2019 (rostrum), a feature which is absent in European lobsters<\/li>\n<li>The spines on the rostrum of the American lobster tend to have red tips, while those on the European lobster are white tipped<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><strong>Why we need your help<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>It is thought that American lobsters could have a negative impact on native European lobsters and other species in the marine environment, by acting as a disease vector, competing for food and shelter and potentially interbreeding.\u00a0 Currently we do not have enough evidence to state with certainty how much of a threat this is, so it is important that any suspected American lobsters are reported so they can be verified by Marine Scotland.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>How you can help<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>If you think you have caught an American lobster, please contact the local Marine Scotland Compliance Fishery Officers, who will assist with collection of this data.\u00a0 A sample will be taken and sent for scientific analysis, and further advice provided as needed.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>The information we are looking to gather is:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Date and location of capture<\/li>\n<li>Photographs of the whole animal, the underside of the claws and the rostrum are minimum required to confirm the report<\/li>\n<li>Sex of the animal<\/li>\n<li>If claws were banded<\/li>\n<li>If it was carrying eggs<\/li>\n<li>Size (weight and\/or carapace length)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.gov.scot\/marine-scotland\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2020\/10\/American-lobster-side-view-crop.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-11807 aligncenter lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/blogs.gov.scot\/marine-scotland\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2020\/10\/American-lobster-side-view-crop.png\" alt=\"American lobster side view \" width=\"712\" height=\"400\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.gov.scot\/marine-scotland\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2020\/10\/American-lobster-side-view-crop.png 712w, https:\/\/blogs.gov.scot\/marine-scotland\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2020\/10\/American-lobster-side-view-crop-300x169.png 300w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 712px) 100vw, 712px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 712px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 712\/400;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h4><strong>Reporting<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Please report <span style=\"color: #1f3864\">any suspected<\/span> American lobsters <span style=\"color: #1f3864\">to <\/span>your local Marine Scotland Compliance Fishery Office or the UK Fisheries Monitoring Centre at 0131 271 9700 or via email at <a href=\"mailto:UKFMC@gov.scot\">UKFMC@gov.scot<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Additional information<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>It is legal to land and sell or consume any American lobsters you catch, however it is illegal to release them into the wild in <span style=\"color: #1f3864\">UK<\/span> waters. <span style=\"color: #1f3864\">The <\/span>knowledge<span style=\"color: #1f3864\"> and data<\/span> gained from reports<span style=\"color: #1f3864\"> of any non-native lobsters<\/span> <span style=\"color: #1f3864\">is essential to <\/span>aid future decision making and policies aimed at protecting <span style=\"color: #1f3864\">the Scottish marine ecosystem<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>We especially want to hear about those lobsters not easily identified as they could potentially be hybrids <span style=\"color: #1f3864\">of<\/span> American and European lobsters.<\/p>\n<p>There is no link between Gaffkaemia in lobsters and foot and mouth disease in cattle.
