This publication from the Scottish Blue Carbon Forum scientists, based at the School of Geography and Sustainable Development, University of St Andrews and the Scottish Association for Marine Science, Scottish Marine Institute, Oban, is the first national assessment of the carbon stocks found in Scotland\u2019s saltmarsh soil.<\/p>\n<p>A saltmarsh is an area of coastal grassland which is regularly flooded by seawater.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_12911\" style=\"width: 481px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.gov.scot\/marine-scotland\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2021\/09\/BlogBlueCarbon.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12911\" class=\"wp-image-12911 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/blogs.gov.scot\/marine-scotland\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2021\/09\/BlogBlueCarbon-300x251.jpg\" alt=\"Saltmarsh story\" width=\"471\" height=\"394\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.gov.scot\/marine-scotland\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2021\/09\/BlogBlueCarbon-300x251.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.gov.scot\/marine-scotland\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2021\/09\/BlogBlueCarbon-768x644.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.gov.scot\/marine-scotland\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2021\/09\/BlogBlueCarbon-1024x858.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.gov.scot\/marine-scotland\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2021\/09\/BlogBlueCarbon-611x512.jpg 611w, https:\/\/blogs.gov.scot\/marine-scotland\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2021\/09\/BlogBlueCarbon-501x420.jpg 501w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 471px) 100vw, 471px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 471px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 471\/394;\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-12911\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Saltmarsh story<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The study, which used nationwide saltmarsh vegetation mapping and extensive saltmarsh soil property data to estimate the carbon stock of surface soils within Scotland\u2019s saltmarsh, found:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Scottish saltmarsh soils hold about 370,000 tonnes of carbon<\/li>\n<li>The average density of carbon is about 6 kg for every square metre of saltmarsh.<\/li>\n<li>There is more carbon per square metre than in most land-based soils.<\/li>\n<li>Upper marsh, which is most inland in a saltmarsh, holds the greatest carbon density<\/li>\n<li>Scotland\u2019s 10 largest saltmarshes hold more than 50% of the total Scottish saltmarsh soil carbon<\/li>\n<li>Scotland\u2019s large estuarine saltmarshes hold the greatest quantity (more than 40%) of saltmarsh carbon within their soils<\/li>\n<li>The saltmarshes of Dumfries and Galloway hold the largest quantity of carbon of any of Scotland\u2019s local authorities (41% of total Scottish surficial saltmarsh soil OC stock).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.gov.scot\/marine-scotland\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2021\/09\/top-10-images.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-12927 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/blogs.gov.scot\/marine-scotland\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2021\/09\/top-10-images-297x300.jpg\" alt=\"Scotland's saltmarsh surficial social (10cm) organic carbon blocks.
