{"id":13250,"date":"2022-04-29T14:34:43","date_gmt":"2022-04-29T13:34:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.gov.scot\/marine-scotland\/?p=13250"},"modified":"2022-05-05T16:32:22","modified_gmt":"2022-05-05T15:32:22","slug":"scottish-fishing-technology-adopted-as-new-global-standard","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.gov.scot\/marine-scotland\/2022\/04\/29\/scottish-fishing-technology-adopted-as-new-global-standard\/","title":{"rendered":"Scottish fishing technology adopted as new global standard"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ices.dk\/Pages\/default.aspx\">International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES)<\/a> has agreed to adopt a new Scottish-designed fishing technology as the new international standard for co-ordinated demersal fish population surveys in the North Sea.<\/p>\n<p>The Marine Scotland Directorate of the Scottish Government co-operated with international partners \u2013 the International Bottom Trawl Survey Working Group (IBTSWG) &#8211; to successfully develop this innovation, which assists in calculating accurate fish stock data, and feeds into the ICES fisheries monitoring and management process and supports the sustainable management of our seas.<\/p>\n<p>The new fishing technology incorporates advances in net design and fishing technology gained over the decades.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left\"><strong>Key design changes compared to the old system are:<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_13284\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.gov.scot\/marine-scotland\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2022\/04\/22545070837_02f6d8d4b2_e.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13284\" class=\"wp-image-13284 size-medium lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/blogs.gov.scot\/marine-scotland\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2022\/04\/22545070837_02f6d8d4b2_e-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Lemon Sole\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.gov.scot\/marine-scotland\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2022\/04\/22545070837_02f6d8d4b2_e-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.gov.scot\/marine-scotland\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2022\/04\/22545070837_02f6d8d4b2_e.jpg 500w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 300px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 300\/225;\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-13284\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Lemon Sole, a type of demersal fish thats caught using this method.<\/p><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>reduction in net mesh sizes (from 200mm to 100mm), and<\/li>\n<li>new light ground gear<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">Overall it provides a robust package which is more efficient, resilient and cost effective, as well as delivering consistent catches and better fish population estimates.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">The new fish survey trawl package will replace the Grand Opening Vertical (GOV) survey model used since 1980, after it was recognised as no longer fit for purpose. A road map has been agreed to enable a smooth transition to the new technology, making sure there is no impact on surveyance of yearly fish stocks.
