On Tuesday morning <em>Scotia<\/em>\u2019s deck resembled some kind of sub-sea jumble sale, but the scientists and <em>Scotia<\/em>\u2019s crew worked hard to gradually transform it into what now looks more like a marine science expo. The most spectacular is a seabed lander that Oceanlab scientists have loaded with a whale skull, time-lapse cameras, current meters, and sensors.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.gov.scot\/marine-scotland\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2015\/07\/Survey-0915S-Stinky-the-Minkey.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3568 alignright lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/blogs.gov.scot\/marine-scotland\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2015\/07\/Survey-0915S-Stinky-the-Minkey.jpg\" alt=\"Survey 0915S Stinky the Minkey\" width=\"215\" height=\"245\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 215px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 215\/245;\" \/><\/a>That\u2019s not all of course, we have Marine Scotland\u2019s towed HD video chariot for mapping the seabed, BGS\u2019s sediment corers, beam trawls and SAMS\u2019s benthic sledge. After some safety drills and testing of equipment in the Moray Firth, <em>Scotia<\/em>\u00a0has now set a course for the east side of Rockall where the whale skull lander will be deployed. We are now just entering the narrows of the Pentland Firth, but it will be another 30 hours of steaming before we get there. At least the wind is behind us for the time being. There is genuine mood of excitement about the trip.
