The Buckland Foundation Lectures and Colloquia.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Buckland Lectures and Colloquia are part of the ongoing activities of the Buckland Foundation, which organises open lectures on contemporary topics in fisheries or marine science in honour of the memory of Frank Buckland, a 19th<\/sup> century Army surgeon, amateur naturalist, and Inspector of Salmon Fisheries from 1867-1880. Buckland pioneered public communication on rational fishing and on aquaculture, and in order to continue that tradition the Foundation was established in 1920 using the proceeds of the Buckland estate.<\/p>\n

The Lectures <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

The topic \u2018Securing the Supply of Food from Marine Fisheries\u2019 will be discussed using recent marine fish stock assessment data to review how depleted EU stocks have reacted to stock recovery programmes.<\/p>\n

The Colloquium also examines current changes in EU fisheries management and regional fisheries governance, and looks at climate change and a visionary scenario for fisheries in 2050.<\/p>\n

This second Colloquium follows a successful opening event held at Fishmongers\u2019 Hall, London, on 2nd<\/sup> June this year. It follows in the wake of a first Colloquium held at Fishmongers\u2019 Hall, London, in March 2013, which featured Professor Sidney Holt and Professor Ian Boyd on the subject of Maximum Sustainable Yield.<\/p>\n

The Speakers<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Professor Colin Bannister<\/strong>, BSc, PhD, Hon DSc, and FSBI Le Cren Medallist (2014). Colin is an Emeritus Fellow and former senior fisheries science advisor at Cefas Lowestoft, & is currently a Buckland Trustee and Chairman of the Shellfish Association of Great Britain.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Professor Carl O\u2019Brien<\/strong>, BSc, MSc, PhD, CStat, CSci, FLS, Cefas Fellow, and Chief Fisheries Science Advisor to Defra, based at Cefas Lowestoft.<\/p>\n

Dr David Righton, <\/strong>BSc, PhD, fish behaviour scientist, & fisheries science leader Cefas Lowestoft. David will summarise material originally delivered at the June meeting by Dr John Pinnegar,<\/strong> BSc, PhD, FSBI Medallist (2009), a specialist on ecosystem studies and the impacts of climate change, and by Dr Steve Simpson, <\/strong>Senior Lecturer in Marine Biology & Global Change, University of \u00a0Exeter.<\/p>\n
