Congratulations to Danny Pendrey and volunteers for their recent Eco City Award from Aberdeen City Council (ACC). The award was given in recognition of the beach cleans that Marine Scotland (MS) staff have been conducting since the beginning of the year.<\/p>\n

Danny Pendrey not only organised the clean-ups, for MS staff, but has been heavily involved in talks with Torry Community Council and Aberdeen City Council about what can be done to keep the shore clean, on a permanent basis.<\/p>\n

This was very much a personal project of Danny\u2019s, who had become increasingly frustrated at the levels of litter around the Torry Battery area, near to where the Marine Laboratory is situated, and decided to do something about it. Professor Moffat, Head of MS Science said: \u201cWe are all extremely proud of what Danny and his team have accomplished. These clean-ups have been done by MS staff, in their own time and on their own initiative. I find it heartening that our staff care so deeply about the areas near where they work and give so selflessly of their own time.\u201d<\/p>\n

To date, Danny and his team have recycled 3,827 bottles and cans, collected 182 full bin bags of waste and spent 14,840 minutes collecting litter; that\u2019s 247 hours!<\/p>\n

Unfortunately Danny was unable to pick up the award, but fellow litter-picker-upper Paul Stainer accepted the award from Councillor Neil Cooney, Convenor of Communities for Aberdeen City Council.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
