Unfortunately, according to a study conducted in 14 countries, the probability for female students of graduating with a Bachelor\u2019s degree, Master\u2019s degree and Doctor\u2019s degree in science-related field are 18%, 8% and 2% respectively, while the percentages of male students are 37%, 18% and 6%.<\/p>\n<p>In order to achieve gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls, the United Nations General Assembly declared 11 February as the International Day of Women and Girls in Science.<\/p>\n<p>To celebrate the first ever International day of Women and Girls in STEM, <a href=\"http:\/\/scidev.net\/\" target=\"_blank\">SciDev.Net<\/a> is hosting a Twitter chat on Thursday 11 February at 1-3pm GMT and they would be delighted if you and your colleagues were able to join the conversation, to thrash out how to make gender equality in science and technology a reality for women and girls worldwide.<\/p>\n<p>Topics under debate include:<\/p>\n<p>How can we break down barriers and better support women in STEM?&#8230;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>How do challenges vary by region and context?<\/li>\n<li>Success stories: What works where, and what has failed?<\/li>\n<li>Has the time come to get radical? What would radical approaches to gender equality look like in different regions?<\/li>\n<li>Is the focus on conventional STEM blinkered to innovation that flourishes in informal spaces?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>To take part or follow the debate; tweet using <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/hashtag\/sciwomen?source=feed_text&amp;story_id=1003934496311486\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;font-size: small\">\u202a<\/span>#\u200eSciWomen<\/a> @SciDevNet.<\/p>\n<p>*********************************************************************************************************<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial\">In addition, to celebrate women in science and help to promote the day everyone is invited to <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/msgfocus.com\/files\/amf_iop_london\/project_35\/IGB_Newsletter\/WIS.pdf\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial\">complete this poster<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Arial\"> and put it up at work on 11th February. If you like, you could also take a picture of it in your lab or office and share it on your social networks.
