{"id":4828,"date":"2016-02-26T13:05:56","date_gmt":"2016-02-26T13:05:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.scotland.gov.uk\/coastal-monitoring\/?p=4828"},"modified":"2016-08-30T17:41:17","modified_gmt":"2016-08-30T16:41:17","slug":"mfv-altaire-survey-0116h-programme","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.gov.scot\/marine-scotland\/2016\/02\/26\/mfv-altaire-survey-0116h-programme\/","title":{"rendered":"MFV Altaire Survey 0116H: Programme"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Duration<\/strong>: 23 February \u2013 7 March 2016<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fishing\/Sampling Gear: <\/strong>Gulf VII plankton sampler<\/p>\n<p><strong>Objectives<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>To carry out mackerel egg survey (ICES Triennial Survey), on the western shelf and slope in the area from 52<sup>o <\/sup>N to 59<sup>o<\/sup> N (see Figure 1 below); and<\/li>\n<li>To collect fish samples, by trawling, for atresia and fecundity analysis back at the laboratory.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Procedures<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<p>The vessel will be loaded on the afternoon of 22 February in Ullapool and will proceed to the first plankton station west of the Butt of Lewis ready to start sampling on 23 February.\u00a0 Plankton stations will be taken west along the line 58<sup>0 <\/sup>45N until zero eggs are found and from there the vessel will head due south and then continue sampling back eastwards along the transect at 57<sup>0<\/sup> 45&#8217;N.\u00a0 Subsequent transects south of this will be at 1<sup>o<\/sup> intervals with stations at 30&#8242; E\/W intervals.\u00a0 Plankton stations will be taken using the Gulf VII sampler with mounted CTD which will record salinity and temperature during the tow.\u00a0 The plankton tows will require the vessel to deploy the sampler at 1-2 knots, and then steam at 5 knots.\u00a0 The sampler will then be lowered at a steady rate (10m\/min) from the plankton crane to within 5 m of the seabed or 200 m \u2013 whichever is shallower.\u00a0 The sampler will then be recovered at the same speed.\u00a0 Once aboard, plankton samples will be washed from the sampler net, fixed in formalin and scored for egg abundance. \u00a0Trawl samples will be taken at the discretion of the scientist in charge.\u00a0 There should be a maximum of 12 trawls for the whole survey, and will usually be taken at the shelf edge.\u00a0 The precise length of each transect cannot be defined in advance as this survey uses an adaptive design, where sampling on a transect will continue until zero or very small numbers of eggs are found.<\/p>\n<p>Once the transect at 52<sup>0<\/sup> 45&#8217;N has been completed and depending on the time available the survey will proceed back north surveying the transects missed out during the first half.\u00a0 The vessel will return to Ullapool for unloading on 7 March 2016.
