To try and address this, this area was chosen to pilot the development of a marine spatial plan, aimed at supporting sustainable management of the area\u2019s seas, while balancing the needs of local communities and marine economic activities and protecting the environment on which they depend.<\/p>\n<p>The pilot plan was a collaborative project,\u00a0developed by working group that included Marine Scotland, Orkney Islands Council and Highland Council. It\u00a0was given Ministerial approval in March 2016 and we&#8217;re\u00a0delighted to say that it has been shortlisted for a <a href=\"https:\/\/saqp2016.com\/\">Scottish Award for Quality in Planning<\/a>. You can read more about it on\u00a0the Marine Scotland\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.gov.scot\/Topics\/marine\/seamanagement\/regional\/activity\/pentlandorkney\">website<\/a>\u00a0and <a href=\"https:\/\/saqp2016.com\/peoples-choice\/\">vote for it to win<\/a>\u00a0the People&#8217;s Choice category. Voting closes on the 1 November 2016.<\/p>\n<p>There have been many lessons learned in going through the planning process which will inform the preparation of other <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gov.scot\/Topics\/marine\/seamanagement\/regional\">regional marine plans<\/a>\u00a0and the governance arrangements that could underpin <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gov.scot\/Topics\/marine\/seamanagement\/regional\/partnerships\">Marine Planning Partnerships<\/a>.
