In the waters surrounding our shores we are also beginning to see the first signs of spring as the phytoplankton diatom population has begun to grow too. Below are some photographs of the more common diatoms that biologists at Marine Scotland Science expect to see over the next few months.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.gov.scot\/marine-scotland\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2012\/02\/Skel-LM-shrunk.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-518 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/blogs.gov.scot\/marine-scotland\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2012\/02\/Skel-LM-shrunk-300x264.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"264\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 300px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 300\/264;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This is a chain of cells belonging to the diatom genus <em>Skeletonema. <\/em>They are one type of phytoplankton that are seen at the very onset of the spring bloom signalling that winter is over. As day length increases and the water column becomes more stable, conditions in the water become more favourable for phytoplankton growth.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.gov.scot\/marine-scotland\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2012\/02\/Chaetoceros.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-519 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/blogs.gov.scot\/marine-scotland\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2012\/02\/Chaetoceros-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 300px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 300\/225;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This is a chain of cells belonging to the genus<em> Chaetoceros.<\/em> These diatoms are very common in Scottish waters. On rare occasions when they are very abundant in the water, these spines can irritate the gills of farmed fish.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.gov.scot\/marine-scotland\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2012\/02\/Pseudonitzchia.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-520 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/blogs.gov.scot\/marine-scotland\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2012\/02\/Pseudonitzchia-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 300px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 300\/225;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Cells belonging to the genus <em>Pseudo-nitzschia<\/em> cannot be identified to species level using the light microscope. They are divided into two size categories (&lt; and &gt; 3\u00b5m diameter). Thin (&lt;3\u00b5m) <em>Pseudo-nitzschia<\/em> cells comprise a large part of the spring bloom diatom community in Scottish waters. Species within the fat (&gt;3\u00b5m)<em> Pseudo-nitzschia<\/em> category in Scottish waters ( <em>P. australis<\/em> and <em>P. seriata<\/em>) have been confirmed as producers of the shellfish toxin, domoic acid. They become more abundant in the late summer and autumn.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.gov.scot\/marine-scotland\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2012\/02\/Mediopyxis-shrunk.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-521 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/blogs.gov.scot\/marine-scotland\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2012\/02\/Mediopyxis-shrunk-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 300px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 300\/225;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Mediopyxis helysia<\/em> was only given a proper name by scientists in 2006. Currently it has only been observed at the Stonehaven monitoring site in theNorth Sea.<\/p>\n<p>Phytoplankton samples are full of cells during the spring bloom period and the analysis time can be more than double that of samples taken during the winter.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.gov.scot\/marine-scotland\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2012\/02\/Spring-bloom.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-522 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/blogs.gov.scot\/marine-scotland\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2012\/02\/Spring-bloom-300x239.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"239\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 300px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 300\/239;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The spring bloom is an important natural event in the marine ecosystem and produces a lot of the food for zooplankton to consume, allowing them to grow and reproduce. There is some concern within the scientific community that the timing of the spring bloom may be influenced by climate change. Warming waters may encourage the spring bloom to occur earlier. This means that the main growth of phytoplankton may be over before the zooplankton are ready to use this food to reproduce.
