The latest estimates of the economic contributions of Scotland\u2019s Marine Economy<\/a> for 2014 have been published today by Marine Scotland’s Analytical Unit. This estimate includes employment and gross value added (GVA) figures for Scotland\u2019s core marine sector, incorporating fishing, aquaculture, fish processing, marine transport and oil and gas services.<\/p>\n

In 2014, Scotland\u2019s core marine sector contributed \u00a34.2 billion in GVA to the Scottish economy, accounting for 3.4 per cent of total Scottish GVA. This represents a decrease of around \u00a3250 million from 2013, which has been driven primarily by reductions in GVA in the oil and gas services sector. Together, the core marine sectors employed 48,100 workers in 2014, around per 1.9 per cent of total Scottish employment.<\/p>\n

Fishing, aquaculture and fish processing together contributed \u00a3952 million in GVA in real terms in 2014 and employed 14,800 workers. GVA for fishing, aquaculture and fish processing has risen 15% since 2013 and 40% since 2012, as a result of increased turnover in the aquaculture and fish processing sectors.<\/p>\n

In 2014, oil & gas services contributed \u00a32.1 billion in GVA and employed 20,000 workers. The oil and gas services sector accounts for 49% of GVA and 41% of employment in the core marine sector.<\/p>\n
