Today is the ‘Day of the Seafarer’ and to\u00a0celebrate, we wanted to share a very special poem\u00a0penned by our resident bard, net rigger and father\u00a0of two Matt Kinghorn<\/a>.<\/p>\n

It’s a little something for all of you who work at sea.<\/p>\n

Day of the Seafarer<\/strong><\/p>\n

It\u2019s not easy you know, going to sea,
\nMaybe for some but not for me.<\/p>\n

I grew up on the coast hearing waves hit the shore,
\nThe wonders of the ocean impossible to ignore.<\/p>\n

My Dad, a skipper, already under its spell,
\nFishing all year, his boat dancing in the swell.<\/p>\n

Painting blue on the deck and white on the rail,
\nHand in hand with my father longing to set sail.<\/p>\n

\u201cWait until you\u2019re older\u201d Mum said \u201cthen you can\u201d,
\nI\u2019d be just like my hero I thought, my Dad, the fisherman.<\/p>\n

Like any other trip, he filled his boat with supplies,
\nWe hugged, we kissed, we said our goodbyes.<\/p>\n

But he never came home, I never saw him again,
\nAnd it still hurts as much now as it did back then.<\/p>\n

Many years have since past, that little boy has grown,
\nI have a wife and two daughters, a beautiful family of my own.<\/p>\n

I go to sea now too, I find it hard when we\u2019re apart,
\nBut my family sail with me in my thoughts and in my heart.<\/p>\n

I\u2019ll so often find myself gazing over the side,
\nWishing my father could have met them and talked of us with pride.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s not easy you know, going to sea,
\nBut I\u2019m just trying to be the best dad that I can be.<\/p>\n
