{"id":9719,"date":"2019-05-21T10:00:15","date_gmt":"2019-05-21T09:00:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.gov.scot\/marine-scotland\/?p=9719"},"modified":"2023-08-25T17:20:20","modified_gmt":"2023-08-25T16:20:20","slug":"small-isles-mpas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.gov.scot\/marine-scotland\/2019\/05\/21\/small-isles-mpas\/","title":{"rendered":"Small Isles MPA&#8217;s"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>MRV <em>Alba na Mara <\/em>Programme<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Survey 0819A<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Duration<\/strong>:\u00a018 May \u2013 4 June 2019<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Equipment:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Hybrid drop\/lander frame + calibration mesh<\/li>\n<li>HD TV system + lights (5 plastic cages)<\/li>\n<li>Armoured cable + spare + axle stands &amp; bar<\/li>\n<li>Stereo TV system<\/li>\n<li>Day grab + table + 2 \u00d7 sieve drawers<\/li>\n<li>EK60 calibration equipment<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Background and Objectives:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>0819A will survey the waters around the Small Isles Marine Protected Area (MPA).\u00a0 The primary objective of this survey is to monitor sites previously visited in 2012-2018 that support Scotland\u2019s Priority Marine Features (PMFs).\u00a0 Work from these surveys will be used to determine the effect of MPAs established in Scottish waters.\u00a0 A secondary objective is that the data will contribute to a potential impact (BACI) study once protective measures within the MPA are introduced. \u00a0Work will cease on the afternoon of 26 May to allow time to travel to Mallaig (TBC) for the purposes of a half landing. Scientific staff will change at this point. Specific objectives are as follows:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>To further survey known populations of PMF species within and outside the Small Isles MPA.<\/li>\n<li>Trial the stereo-imagery system developed by MSS.<\/li>\n<li>To sample sites around the Small Isles MPA for the purpose of eDNA analysis.<\/li>\n<li>To calibrate the EK60 echosounder system mounted on board <em>Alba<\/em> na Mara.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Embarkation:\u00a0<\/strong>Scientists will join the vessel in Oban around 11:00 (BST) on 18 May. \u00a0Weather permitting, and after all vessel drills have been completed, <em>Alba na Mara<\/em> will depart Kyle of Lochalsh, heading for the Small Isles MPA.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Benthic survey:\u00a0<\/strong>The survey will consist of a series of UW HDTV surveys of the seabed at various sites inside and outside the Small Isles MPA (Figure 1). \u00a0The survey will utilise the modular camera frame (hybrid drop and lander frame \u2013 2460 \u00d7 1900 \u00d7 1940 mm, L \u00d7 W \u00d7 H) deployed from the aft of the vessel.\u00a0 Species type, density and substrate type (assessed visually) will be classified for each video transect post-survey.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The stereo-video system will be attached to the lander frame and set to record in parallel with the PMF survey. \u00a0The bar will be moved around the frame to investigate the effect of changing the camera orientation with respect to the area under observation.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>If time allows, grab samples will be taken at sites around the MPA. \u00a0Samples will be frozen on board and will be analysed at a later date for traces of environmental DNA (eDNA) from species classed as Priority Marine Features (e.g. <em>Atrina fragilis<\/em>).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Operations:\u00a0<\/strong>Survey operations will take place between the hours of 06:00 and 18:00 (GMT) and the work schedule will be decided by the SIC in conjunction with the skipper.\u00a0 Work will cease at an appropriate time to allow the vessel to steam to Kirkwall to collect the acoustic technician.\u00a0 The following 12 hours will be spent in Scapa Flow calibrating the EK60 echosounder system, after which <em>Alba na Mara<\/em> will head for Fraserburgh.
