Youth is the Word

Hi everyone, my name is Ellyce and I’m studying PR & Marketing at Queen Margaret University in Edinburgh. I recently finished a student placement in the Scottish Government’s Comms/Marketing department and I was asked to write a blog to talk about my experiences. I’ve never written a blog before so I’m going to give it my best shot!

We should discuss what my expectations were before I started and if I’m going to be honest, I didn’t know what to expect. Communications was a new concept for me as in my course we primarily focus on just marketing. On my first day I was very nervous, I didn’t know what the people were going to be like and I really worried that they wouldn’t like me… it was kind of like being the new person in the office. Thankfully, I was so very wrong and I shouldn’t have been worried, I felt very welcome and there was always a sense that everyone would be there to help if I needed it.

I enjoyed every second of my placement! My most memorable day of my placement was the day of the Royal Visit at Holyrood Palace with HRH Prince Harry and Miss Meghan Markle. The whole day was a whirlwind and I don’t think I have ever been so stressed in my life because, like this blog, I also had never helped to run an event either. Regardless of the stress, I still enjoyed myself and although I didn’t actually get to meet HRH Prince Harry and Miss Meghan Markle personally, it’s still my claim to fame haha!

I think I spent about 50% of my time at placement in meetings, SO MANY MEETINGS! Ok, I’m definitely over exaggerating but there were a few. I have learned a lot from placement (learned how to write a blog, clearly), I now have the ability to confidently run social media accounts and how to put up content that is appealing to followers amongst a few other things. I primarily learnt that I think I could actually work in communications. It was never a job route I actually considered, but I am now seriously considering it when I finally graduate!

I would like to thank Fiona, Nic and Gregor for allowing me to do my student placement within the Smarter Marketing Department in the Scottish Government.
