Later this week (Friday September 25th) we will be going to an event with a focus on the artistic and creative aspects of democratic renewal. The City Link Symposium: Democratic Renewal is part of a series of 14 events over 4 days as part of the City Link Festival in Edinburgh, a joint venture between Scotland’s capital city and Copenhagen. The City Link network is a growing group of artists, academics and creatives of all shades who have an interest in creating democratic change in cities through artistic and cultural means and the symposium will give us the opportunity to hear real life stories about what this all means.<\/p>\n

The things we will hear include stories of citizen and community led projects that acted as catalysts for different approaches to urban planning and development and how collectives in the arts and culture communities can create relationships with municipalities that mean citizens have greater involvement in the lives of their cities. There will also be practical workshops that will give us hands on experience of exploring, mapping and hacking Edinburgh. These things are very much aligned with something that is at the core of the Digital Engagement Team’s work: how we co-produce policy with<\/em> people and not do policy to<\/em> them. We’re excited to find out what we can bring back to Scottish Government from the symposium and how seeing democratic renewal through a more creative lens can help us consider a fuller spectrum of democratic activity in our work than we usually now.<\/p>\n
