Updated Climate Adaptation Guidance to Strengthen Sustainable Public Procurement

May 27, 2026 by No Comments | Category climate change, Scottish Procurement, Sustainability

We have updated our Climate Change Adaptation Guidance on the Sustainable Procurement Tools.

Adaptation involves taking action to manage foreseeable climate change impacts, including:

  • being prepared for increasing climate change risks
  • identifying new opportunities
  • considering how impacts may be felt differently across the wider society

Those delivering public sector contracts need to be prepared for the growing impacts of climate change, ensuring risks are considered throughout the design, development and operation of services.

Increasingly severe and unpredictable weather can affect service delivery as well as the resilience of local, regional and global supply chains, potentially damaging infrastructure and causing business disruption.

The guidance provides comprehensive support for each stage of the procurement process, including example clauses, as well as guidance on assessing risks. It also forms part of the wider suite of resources designed to help public bodies embed sustainability within their procurement activities.

Where relevant, it should be read alongside other Climate Change guidance focusing on mitigation measures:

Opportunities for jobs and skills to support climate change mitigation and adaptation may also be relevant so you may also consider the Employment, Skills and Training guide.

Users of this guidance should have completed the Climate Literacy e-learning, available from the Sustainable Procurement Tools portal.
