It\u2019s Scot Careers Week!<\/span><\/a>\u202f We\u2019re shining a light on our colleagues career journeys in procurement and their experiences at Scottish Procurement and Property Directorate (SPPD) so far.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

How did you start your career in procurement?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

While I was busy building up my voluntary experience, I worked with Skills Development Scotland to access my <\/span>longer-term career plans. They directed me towards the care leaver scheme<\/a>\u00a0as I expressed an interest in government and public service. The scheme is run by the department for Education and\u00a0allocates\u00a0care leavers to posts across government. I am\u00a0very fortunate\u00a0that\u00a0I landed in Procurement!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Before I joined I didn\u2019t know too much about Procurement specifically, but I did really enjoy studying Business Management at school and keeping up with business\/supply chain news, my inexperience within Procurement meant a lot of hands-on experience early on and the opportunity to provide an outsiders perspective which has come in handy.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Procurem<\/span>ent is a critical element of government as we work on acquiring anything the government requires in it<\/span>\u2019s day to day operations! As a Capability Assistant, I have been involved in ensuring the purchase and running of training sessions for those within procurement whilst working towards becomin<\/span>g a qualified CIPS member.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What\u2019s your best experience been so far?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n

Being\u00a0involved in the Scottish Government\u2019s Commercial Week for the last\u00a0three\u00a0years has been a delightful experience which I hope to continue!\u00a0Commercial Week is an\u00a0annual\u00a0event\u00a0that involves\u00a0commercial learning\u00a0to\u00a0ensure that the Scottish Government is commercially aware and striving for value for money.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Personally,\u00a0providing support and organising the\u00a0running of Commercial Week has boosted my communication skills, my confidence and\u00a0presentation\u00a0skills\u00a0–\u00a0which\u00a0assisted\u00a0me at this\u00a0years\u00a0Scottish Government N<\/span>ational\u202fProcurement Conference as I was a member for our <\/span>Procurement People of Tomorrow panel<\/span><\/a>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\"ProcurementDu<\/span>ring my c<\/span>areer as a care leaver intern, I have been leveraging my background as a lever to boost social mobility and other Diversity and Inclusion objectives within the Scottish Government. This includes running Diversity and Inclusion sessions within my directorate on a variety of topics by sharing best practice. This has led to me becoming a mentor for another care leaver intern which has been very fulfilling and an excellent learning experience.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Tell us about your career journey so far\u2026<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n

I heard about Modern Apprenticeships through family members, who mentioned that the Scottish Government were offering opportunities. From what they told me and from my own perspective, it stood out as\u00a0a great way\u00a0to start building a career, especially after a bit of research.\u00a0Over 90% of apprentices move into full-time employment afterwards, so\u00a0far\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0really felt like a \u2018right place, right time\u2019 sort of deal.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Truth be told, I\u00a0didn\u2019t\u00a0even know that the apprenticeship I applied for was a route into procurement! Beforehand I had a vague idea that procurement was broad, busy, and opened doors to a lot of different career paths, but that was about it. Coming in with little\u00a0previous\u00a0experience\u00a0actually turned\u00a0out to be a strength. It meant I could ask the \u201cwhy do we do it this way?\u201d questions and bring a fresh perspective to the team. That helped me carve out my own contributions early on and made the learning curve feel more like an opportunity than a barrier.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I\u00a0definitely\u00a0would\u00a0recommend procurement\u00a0as a career!\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0far more varied than people expect.\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0a massively multifaceted profession and after three years of this, I can confirm so far that no two days are the same. You have the chance to work with\u00a0a huge range\u00a0of people and organisations. The skills you pick up transfer across sectors too, which makes it\u00a0a really adaptable\u00a0career path.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I work in the Best Practice team, where we look after the Procurement Journey and Supplier Journey guidance. That means lots of cross-team working, stakeholder engagement, and plenty of problem-solving.\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0the kind of environment where\u00a0you\u2019re\u00a0always learning, sometimes without realising it, simply by being involved.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Overall,\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0a career that mixes structure with creativity, gives you room to grow, and keeps you on your toes in the best\u00a0possible way.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

How has your experience been so far?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n

My experience so far has been extremely rewarding. I\u2019ve had the chance to work on a huge mix of projects, from developing the Procurement and Supplier Journey websites (which I take a keen interest in\u00a0anyway!), helping shape training material and user support, develop and improve programmes which span the entirety of the public sector, the list goes on.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

One of the real highlights has been getting involved in events like\u00a0Meet the Buyer, where you see firsthand how the\u00a0work\u00a0we do behind the scenes\u00a0actually helps\u00a0suppliers and organisations.\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0been a humbling experience to see that what you do in the workplace\u00a0isn\u2019t\u00a0just going in and completing tasks, but something that has a real impact on people\u2019s businesses and livelihoods.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Day to day, the role has given me plenty of opportunities to work with different teams, whether that\u2019s Best Practice, Policy, or colleagues across the wider organisation. That has been one of the most valuable parts of the job for me\u00a0–\u00a0you learn a lot simply by working alongside others, who are experts in their own areas. A\u00a0lot of my knowledge has come from absorbing things through conversations, meetings, and cross-team projects.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s\u00a0also a surprisingly creative role! Whether\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0improving guidance, building accessible content, or helping design clearer processes and tools, there\u2019s always space to bring your own ideas to the table, my colleagues have\u00a0definitely helped\u00a0and supported me through that process!\u00a0I\u2019ve\u00a0definitely grown\u00a0in confidence, both in understanding procurement and in taking ownership of pieces of work.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Overall,\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0been a\u00a0really positive\u00a0experience, full of learning, collaboration, and those little moments where everything \u2018clicks\u2019 and you realise\u00a0you\u2019re\u00a0part of a wider entity.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
