{"id":640,"date":"2018-07-13T10:28:34","date_gmt":"2018-07-13T09:28:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.gov.scot\/public-procurement\/?p=640"},"modified":"2018-07-13T10:28:34","modified_gmt":"2018-07-13T09:28:34","slug":"career-ready-interns","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.gov.scot\/public-procurement\/2018\/07\/13\/career-ready-interns\/","title":{"rendered":"Career Ready interns"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Five\u00a0S6 students joined the Scottish Procurement and Commercial Directorate on Monday 25 June for four weeks as\u00a0part of the Career Ready programme. <a href=\"https:\/\/careerready.org.uk\/\">Career Ready<\/a> is a UK wide charity linking employers with schools and colleges to open up the world of work to young people and help them build the confidence, skills and networks to achieve their potential. Two of these students, Mya and Rhiannon, have been spending time with our eCommerce team, but have been learning about so much more than just procurement. Here&#8217;s what they&#8217;ve been up to in their second week:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Half of the internship has gone already and we&#8217;ve done so much. This week we went\u00a0to the police college in Tulliallan. It&#8217;s a huge place and it\u2019s full of different sections to train the police officers. They have fake bars and shops in order to re-create typical crime scenes,\u00a0which help to give the officers exposure to these types of scenarios and allows them to learn from their mistakes.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We were also told about the level of fitness required to be a police officer and it\u2019s pretty intense. Can you imagine having to run 15 laps of the track whilst doing a bunch of exercises in between?\u00a0Also, who knew that police officers had to put up with ghosts? They call her the Grey Lady and multiple officers have encountered her. That\u2019s certainly one way to test bravery. Overall, the day was the highlight of our week.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We didn\u2019t just have sessions with the police though. We\u2019ve also had sessions with the First Minister&#8217;s Questions team, First Minister&#8217;s policy and delivery area, careers in nursing, staff from Private Office and a presentation from Student Award Agency for Scotland, so its been a pretty busy week! We both agree that the meetings were useful and informative.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We also got to see a conference room in VQ &#8211; it was huge! It&#8217;s like a mini cinema but instead of watching movies, you watch people presenting.
