{"id":1890,"date":"2022-01-10T16:49:43","date_gmt":"2022-01-10T16:49:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.gov.scot\/rural-environment\/?p=1890"},"modified":"2022-02-02T14:03:52","modified_gmt":"2022-02-02T14:03:52","slug":"extension-of-the-pig-producers-hardship-support-scheme","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.gov.scot\/rural-environment\/2022\/01\/10\/extension-of-the-pig-producers-hardship-support-scheme\/","title":{"rendered":"Extension of the Pig Producers\u2019 Hardship Support Scheme"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A scheme set up to provide financial support to pig producers affected by the temporary closure of the abattoir at Brechin last year, and subsequent suspension of its China export licence, is to be extended.<\/p>\n<p>The closure of the Quality Pig Processors (QPP) plant at Brechin resulted in a backlog in pigs waiting for slaughter and the loss of their licence to export pork to China \u2013 a lucrative market for the sector.<\/p>\n<p>As the sector waits for export restrictions to be lifted, Rural Affairs Secretary Mairi Gougeon has announced an extension to the scheme with funding support of more than \u00a3680,000.<\/p>\n<p>Ms Gougeon said:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe COVID-related closure of Brechin abattoir last year and the subsequent loss of the plant\u2019s export licence to China has continued to have a negative impact on pig farmers, during already unprecedented challenging times for the farming industry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Pig Producers\u2019 Hardship Scheme made available last summer delivered essential funding to eligible producers during this difficult period and I am pleased to announce that we are extending this scheme, which underlines our continuous support for our livestock sector.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe scheme will open early this year, when a further announcement will be made providing guidance for applications.
