{"id":511,"date":"2018-11-16T09:46:16","date_gmt":"2018-11-16T09:46:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.gov.scot\/rural-environment\/?p=511"},"modified":"2018-11-16T09:46:16","modified_gmt":"2018-11-16T09:46:16","slug":"in-the-news-red-meat-levy-success","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.gov.scot\/rural-environment\/2018\/11\/16\/in-the-news-red-meat-levy-success\/","title":{"rendered":"In the news: Red meat levy success"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;font-size: 12pt\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">An amendment to the UK Government\u2019s Agriculture Bill will see the issue of the Red Meat Levy finally resolved. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;font-size: 12pt\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">Levy paying rural businesses in Scotland are currently losing out on up to \u00a32 million each year, as the levy is collected at a point of slaughter regardless of where animals spent their lives and where value has been added to beef cattle, sheep and pigs.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;font-size: 12pt\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">The Scottish Government and industry \u2013 particularly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.qmscotland.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">QMS<\/a> and Jim McLaren, its recently retired Chairman \u2013 have worked tirelessly for the last decade to find a sustainable solution that would ensure that the monies raised through this levy could be used to benefit the Scottish quality meat sector, including marketing and promotion of Scotch beef, Scotch lamb and specially selected pork to consumers at home and abroad.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;font-size: 12pt\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">Welcoming the amendment, Rural Economy Secretary Fergus Ewing said:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;font-size: 12pt\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">\u201cI am delighted at long last to secure an agreement to repatriate the red meat levy, which will undoubtedly benefit our livestock industry.
