{"id":3428,"date":"2019-03-07T09:52:45","date_gmt":"2019-03-07T09:52:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.gov.scot\/scotlands-economy\/?p=3428"},"modified":"2022-01-26T15:08:30","modified_gmt":"2022-01-26T15:08:30","slug":"statistics-highlight-importance-of-eu-market-to-scotland","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.gov.scot\/scotlands-economy\/2019\/03\/07\/statistics-highlight-importance-of-eu-market-to-scotland\/","title":{"rendered":"Statistics highlight importance of EU market to Scotland"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The publication of <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20201018055125\/https:\/\/www.uktradeinfo.com\/Statistics\/RTS\/Pages\/default.aspx\">HMRC\u2019s latest Regional Trade Statistics<\/a> this morning shows the importance of the EU market to Scotland.<\/p>\n<p>Commenting on the statistics, Trade Minister Ivan McKee said:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese are very encouraging figures. The value of Scotland\u2019s annual goods exports increased by 6 per cent to \u00a330.3 billion. This is a higher growth rate than the overall UK figure of 3 per cent and the highest percentage increase of any UK country.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe figures show just how important trade with the EU is. Exports of goods to the EU are up 14 per cent to \u00a315.9 billion and, more specifically, exports of oil and gas to the EU are up 29 per cent from \u00a36.2 billion to \u00a38 billion.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile it\u2019s clear that Scotland remains open for business despite the ongoing uncertainty over Brexit, the figures also demonstrate the importance of the EU as the largest single market for Scotland\u2019s international exports. The figures also highlight the significance of the single market and customs union, which is eight times bigger than the UK market alone. This is particularly important given that trade with the EU makes up more than half of Scotland\u2019s exports.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will continue to call on the UK Government to immediately rule out the possibility of a \u2018No Deal\u2019 Brexit and extend the Article 50 process. As a responsible government we are also continuing &#8211; and indeed intensifying &#8211; our work to prepare for all outcomes as best we can.
