{"id":991,"date":"2013-01-22T17:56:42","date_gmt":"2013-01-22T17:56:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.scotland.gov.uk\/scotlands-economy\/?p=991"},"modified":"2018-03-09T10:59:07","modified_gmt":"2018-03-09T10:59:07","slug":"mesl-microwaves-globally-connected","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.gov.scot\/scotlands-economy\/2013\/01\/22\/mesl-microwaves-globally-connected\/","title":{"rendered":"MESL Microwaves &#8211; Globally Connected"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Founded in 1964, MESL microwave has established a strong reputation internationally for its microwave products \u2013 we export more than 70 per cent of the components we manufacture in the UK to more than 25 territories.<\/p>\n<p>In 2008 we recognised the huge opportunities available in the emerging \u2018space\u2019 market and through working with Scottish Enterprise and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sdi.co.uk\/export-from-scotland.aspx\">Scottish Development International<\/a> we secured research and development funding to support our plans to diversify our product range and enter the new \u2018space\u2019 market and overseas territories.<\/p>\n<p>Fast forward four years and we are seeing positive results &#8211; 95 per cent of the products we have designed for Space are for export markets.<\/p>\n<p>The world class engineering skills\u00a0available in Scotland has already been recognised with our company winning projects to develop components for NASA (Jet Propulsion Labs) for a satellite to measure the oceans surface height and with Mitsubishi for components for the guidance of the HTV vehicle which is the new supply vessel for the international space station that replaces the space shuttle along with Thales Alenia Space and Astrium, two of the world\u2019s leading satellite manufacturers.<\/p>\n<p>Our engineers are involved with the European Space Agency in creating the technology roadmap for microwave transmissions, this will increase the data rates from Earth to Satellites and then back to Earth again, much like the 4G telecoms revolution is doing for mobile telephone networks enabling high definition video to be sent around the world.<\/p>\n<p>We are implementing a 10 year plan to diversify into the Space payload market to create the highly skilled, high added value jobs required to ensure that Scotland and the UK remain that the forefront of the world\u2019s technology markets.
