Housing is an issue that comes up in the news constantly. Providing enough high quality, sustainable and affordable housing for everyone in Scotland is a government priority, and data from the Scottish Household Survey (SHS) is used to explore the relationship between living circumstances and the characteristics, attitudes and behaviours of Scottish households.<\/p>\n
Importantly, the survey shows that there are now three times the number of households living in the private rented sector than when the survey began in 1999. This data was used to provide context for the government\u2019s Private Rented Sector Strategy for Scotland \u2013 \u201cA place to stay, a place to call home\u201d (launched in 2013) which is helping to improve standards and to ensure the sector meets growing demand from a range of different household types. More recently, SHS findings have been used to develop the new Private Residential Tenancy which was introduced in December 2017. The biggest change in private renting in a generation, the new tenancy regime will provide increased security and stability for tenants as well as predictability for both tenants and landlords.<\/p>\n
The Scottish Household Survey is an important resource for understanding what is actually going on with people\u2019s housing situations. Knowing what kind of housing people in Scotland are living in, and in what condition it\u2019s in, can help national and local governments ensure everyone in Scotland has a place not just to sleep in, but to live in too. Financial institutions, landlords, regulatory bodies, and the construction industry\u2014working in partnership with government\u2014can use data from the SHS to plan and improve housing across Scotland.<\/p>\n
