The Funeral Sector Register – registration number
From 2 March 2026, the Funeral Sector Register moved the registration numbers from a QR-style code to a 10-digit number. The new format is designed to be more practical for day‑to‑day use, simpler to record and share, and easier to incorporate into routine administrative processes.
Register numbers on application forms
Further to our blog of 2 March, the burial and cremation application forms have been updated and now include space for the funeral sector registration number to be included.
The Scottish Government expects each burial authority, cremation authority and funeral director to register. This will help support the work of the Inspectors of Burial, Cremation, Hydrolysis and Funeral Directors. Under the Burial and Cremation (Scotland) Act 2016 burial and cremation authorities have discretion whether to accept any application or to ask for additional information.
If you have already registered, you can access your registration number by searching the register, or by logging into your epass profile.
Details on how to register can be found by visiting the Funeral Sector Register. Please contact FuneralSectorRI@gov.scot if you encounter any difficulties using this site.
