Marine
A National Marine Centre for Scotland
October 4, 2016 by Marine Scotland Communications 1 Comment | Category Collaborations, Marine Directorate general
The Scottish Seabird Centre in North Berwick fulfils an important role in helping people to understand the importance of some of Scotland’s most important sea-bird populations. Looking to the future, they are proposing to extend the Centre into a National Marine Centre for Scotland, and Marine Scotland is delighted to be working with them to enable people to better understand the special contribution made by our marine ecosystems and build increased visitor numbers – both tourist and educational.
But what do you think? Why don’t you tell us in this short, online survey. The survey, which should take no more than 10 minutes to complete, is an opportunity for everyone, whether you have an interest in the marine environment or not, to contribute and provide your ideas and suggestions to create a National Marine Centre for Scotland.
Thank you.

The present Seabird Centre is basically a souvenir shop and cafe which organises environmentally unfriendly high speed boat trips around the local islands…….and it has an some educational facility.
Having just visited an exhibition which sets out the proposals for a National Marine Centre I was perturbed to find a lack of tangible Marine Life content.
The whole justification seemed to be based on current failures and projected more of the same in the future. For example,
The tunnel access has not been a success…so lets build a walkway
The new construction will obscure the view of the harbour… so lets build an observation tower.
The “hole in the floor” which gave a preview of the exhibition area was covered in…the result was a gloomy and claustrophobic exhibition are .. and so on.
No information was available regarding the “marine research” which would take place and how it would relate to the several Scottish marine research establishments which are already in existence.
My overall impression was unfavourable and it all looks like a bit of phoney empire building.
