Host a pupil with the new ‘Procurement Placement Pack’

A new Placement Pack has been developed by our Procurement People of Tomorrow (PPoT) team to encourage more young people to join the procurement profession. The pack is freely available to all public, private and third-sector procurement functions in Scotland. Read on to find out more!

Procurement People of TomorrowThe PPoT initiative was established in 2012 to address the growing skills gap in the procurement profession and increase the awareness of the many exciting careers available within procurement in Scotland.

One aspect of the programme is to let more young people know about what procurement actually is, and how it can be the route to their dream career! School placements have always been an excellent opportunity to provide pupils with an invaluable experience of hands-on work within an exciting profession. The common issue with placements is that they are often undertaken alongside procurement professionals who are juggling their day-to-day responsibilities and so the value of the placement can sometimes be diminished.

Young person holding Placement PackThe new pack developed by PPoT has been specifically designed to make the placement as valuable as possible for the pupil. But equally, it aims to remove a lot of the labour-intensive time which the placement host would usually have to commit to planning and managing their activities.

The pack follows a challenge-based approach to learning, by setting out 5 days’ worth of challenges for the pupil to complete. The challenges encourage the pupil to use their initiative, leaning on meta skills such as problem solving, research and presentation abilities. The placement host is there to support the pupil instead of providing the pupil with work which they hope will be interesting.

Through uptake of the pack we hope pupils are able to get more value from placements and that the reduced amount of employer-led effort results in more organisations being willing to bring regular school placements in, helping to promote the profession across Scotland.

We encourage any procurement functions to take our pack and use it to host placements and help develop our procurement people of tomorrow.
