Deadline for registering death

August 10, 2026 by No Comments | Category DCRS, Funeral directors, Guidance, NRS, Registration

This is a reminder that, in accordance with section 23 of the Registration of Births, Deaths and Marriages (Scotland) Act 1965, the informant (the person registering the death) has a duty to provide the registrar with the particulars of death within 8 days. National Records of Scotland (NRS) understand that this requirement can cause anxiety at an already very difficult time for the family, particularly if there is a delay with the doctor issuing the medical certificate of cause of death (MCCD) or with getting an appointment at the registration office.

If the informant is concerned about meeting that deadline, please direct them to the registrar to discuss their concerns.
