The 3 September is Merchant Navy Day – a day for us to recognise and thank the seafaring men and women who were involved in both World Wars, and to celebrate our modern day merchant seafarers.

What you may not know though is that our colleagues from Marine Scotland Compliance, who crew the Marine Protection and Research vessels,  are also members of the Merchant Navy. For our crews, working on vessels has required hours of rigorous training, involving college time and sea time to gain their qualifications. Like other seafarers, it can involve long periods of time away from home and family, but the rewards can be many.

The sea can be a beautiful but unforgiving place to be, so today, let’s celebrate all of our seagoing men and women and wish them a safe passage to wherever their travels take them next.
