Planning and Architecture

Graduate Placement

I started my six month post with Planning and Architecture Division (PAD) at the end of February having graduated with an MSc in City Planning and Regeneration at the University of Glasgow, which followed directly on from a BSc in Environmental Management at Glasgow Caledonian University.

In the first week I spent some time talking to the various teams that form the Planning and Architecture Division, in order to gain an understanding of the scope of the work within the Division and get to know colleagues. I have attended internal meetings, and external meetings with councils, SDP teams and other stakeholders.

I have been doing work for the Development Plans Team handling Supplementary Guidance and collating responses to development plan consultations. As well as this I will be contributing work to the National Development Planning Forum.

During my time here I have attended some internal Directorate events and Divisional ones within Planning and Architecture. The more local events such as the ‘Show and Tell’ sessions, where colleagues from different subject areas host a session explaining the work they do, are interesting and are a great platform to stay informed with projects. I have also attended talks organised by other areas of Government which presents opportunities to learn beyond my role and I intend to visit the Scottish Parliament to watch a debate and First Ministers Questions.

I am really enjoying my time here, and I am looking forward to grabbing other opportunities as they arise to support my RTPI assessment of professional competence.
