Marine Scotland Science had a very important visitor at its Marine Laboratory in Aberdeen this morning.

The President of Mozambique, HE Armando Emilio Guebuza, was given a tour round the state-of-the-art facilities by Marine Scotland’s Head of Science, Professor Colin Moffat.

During the visit, the President explained more about the freshwater aquaculture industry and the deep water fisheries that exist off the Mozambique coast. Marine Scotland scientists Bill Turrell and Nick Bailey spoke about Scottish fisheries, including human pressures and the current research and monitoring that is being undertaken in Scotland.

Professor Colin Moffat said:

“Fish and shellfish are wonderful food products recognised world-wide for their nutritional value, providing a valuable source of protein. At the same time, we use our seas for many other reasons and have exploited our fisheries, in some cases, to critical levels. Sharing of measures to conserve fisheries and develop an ecosystem approach to the management of our seas is a global aspiration and we were very pleased to have this opportunity to discuss such issues with the President of Mozambique as well as laying the foundation for possible future collaboration between scientists from both countries.”
