European Ocean Energy Association’s annual conference took place on 29th and 30th of October in Edinburgh sponsored by Scottish Development International. It was the Association’s first conference outside Brussels and the most successful annual conference to date indicating the increasing strength as force for development of the European ocean energy sector. EU-OEA’s 2013 conference marked Ocean Energy being firmly placed on the agenda for European Energy Policy.
Scottish First Minister, Mr Alex Salmond, welcomed the Association’s important work in raising the profile of wave and tidal energy technologies. Mr Salmond was pleased that the two-day conference was a success, having enabled speakers and delegates to explore in depth many of the key opportunities and challenges faced by this pioneering clean-energy industry. He also stated that “The conference shows that Europe is now focused on our clear, shared objective – to fully commercialise ocean energy by 2025”.
The event was well attended and participation was at an astonishingly high level. The issues addressed were complex and reflected the very challenging environment in which this emerging industry is developing. Nevertheless, it was very encouraging to hear the very strong messages of policy and budgetary commitment given by the First Minister of Scotland, the UK Energy Minister and the Director General from the European Commission DG MARE.
