You may have seen in the news that a consultation has been launched on proposals for a Deposit Return Scheme across England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

The Scottish Government has already consultated on a Deposit Return scheme. The consultation closed closed in September and the analysis is due imminently.

 A Scottish Government Spokesperson said:

“We welcome the consultation on introducing of a Deposit Return Scheme across England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

“Scotland was the first part of the UK to commit to a Deposit Return Scheme and publication of our own consultation analysis is imminent.

“While we are further ahead than the rest of the UK in our preparations, we are nevertheless committed to continuing our engagement on the potential for co-operation. Should the ambitions for a Deposit Return scheme across the rest of the UK match our own, we would be happy to explore how our respective schemes might usefully align in the future.

“We also welcome the launch of a UK-wide consultation on extended producer responsibility. While environmental matters are devolved, we are willing to work with the other administrations where possible to improve environmental outcomes. We will be looking very closely at the results of the consultation and working to ensure that the future approach matches our ambition and delivers for Scotland.”
