We are very happy to announce the latest update to the Scottish Government Design System Figma Kit, bringing the kit in line with our refreshed styling guidance and the most up to date design features in Figma.

This update includes the addition of several new components, such as the confirmation message for informing users of changes made while progressing through a form, page metadata, and the task list pattern.

In line with our mobile first approach all references to “mobile” in the kit have now been changed to “default”.

The biggest changes in this release are mainly under the bonnet, with the addition of variables. By integrating these variables into our design system library, we’ve made it more straightforward for other public sector organizations to modify and adapt the kit to their own needs.

Variables allow for greater control without the need to manually adjust each component or pattern. This means you can now change default colours, typography, spacing, and more with just a few clicks, giving the wider public sector the flexibility to adapt the design system to their own requirements.

In line with this shift, we have also removed the old colour styles. All components and patterns now directly reference the new variables. This change not only simplifies the design process with more descriptive tokens used for component styling, but also reduces redundancy, making the kit streamlined and more efficient to use.

We have rebuilt many components to utilise theses new variables and improve their functionality and usability.

We hope this new update will assist your teams in creating accessible, cohesive designs. Sign up for the design system newsletter for updates or get in touch with any feedback or queries at designsystem@gov.scot.
