European Structural Funds celebrate Europe Day

May 11, 2017 by No Comments | Category Events

On Tuesday 9 May colleagues from our division joined other Member States and Scottish bodies to celebrate Europe Day in our beautiful capital city of Edinburgh.

Europe Day celebrations in Edinburgh begin.

The yearly celebration came about after Robert Shuman’s declaration on the 9th May 1950, in which he set out his plan for a new form of political cooperation in Europe in a bid to stop another war. A year later a treaty creating a European institution to pool and manage steel production was signed, and this was the beginning of the European Union. Europe Day has since become a symbol of Europe and a day to celebrate peace and unity in Europe.

Ms Fiona Hyslop, MSP Secretary for Culture, Tourism and External Affairs, opens the event.

The sun was shining! The atmosphere was friendly and fun! Ms Fiona Hyslop, MSP Secretary for Culture, Tourism and External Affairs, opened the event with her encouraging speech on the history of Europe Day and the unity of Member States, setting the scene for the day ahead. Michael Russell, MSP for UK Negotiations on Scotland’s Place in Europe, continued this theme by speaking of the peace and prosperity EU membership has brought.

Colourful costumes matched the vibrancy of the event with cultural performances from Scotland, Romania, Poland, Ireland and Lithuania entertaining fellow member states and the public.

Next year we will be celebrating Europe Day in Glasgow. We invite you to join us for this event. To keep informed for details on this and other related European Structural Funds activities continue to follow this blog and our twitter account @scotgovESIF.

Haste ye back.
