Scottish Government’s Design System – user feedback

The Scottish Government’s Design System team and Payments Service design team have been working closely for the launch of their new Payments Service.

The Scottish Government’s Design System is also known as Digital Scotland Design System.

Inclusive testing

Recently, the Payments Service team completed inclusive testing on their service which has been using the Scottish Government Design System standards. The aim was to understand how accessible the task-based navigation and visual design is for the Payments Service.
Five citizen volunteers took part in the moderated usability testing and interviews during June 2022 to find out what it was like to use the service with:

• A visual impairment
• Limited colour perception
• Dyslexia and/or Dyscalculia

The volunteers used a variety of adaptive strategies, including text-to-speech software, keyboard navigation, screen filters and a magnifying glass. They mapped to Levels 7, 8 and 9 of the GOV.UK Digital Inclusion scale.

Design System user insights

The overall impressions and feedback of the inclusive testing have been very positive.

Following are some of the user quotes shared by Payments Service highlighting Design System insights:

• “This is more usable than I expected from a Scottish Government portal”
• “It looks new and fresh and user friendly”
• “This page would be easy to use as someone who has visual impairment”
• “It’s really easy to see what’s going on, I don’t need my magnifying glass”
• “Clear to see everything… Good sizing”

Referring to the Design System focus states and styles used for example colours, the participants in the inclusive testing gave positive feedback which helped in making Payments Service accessible.
