Data maturity information sessions for public sector organisations

Blog by Sally Kerr, Project Manager in Digital Directorate’s Technical Data Policy team.

I have previously blogged about the Data Maturity and Pathways project and our work with public sector organisations to co-develop the Data Transformation Framework (DTF).

Many public sector organisations know they want to use their data more effectively, but are unsure where to start. It can feel too difficult to tackle but if it’s not addressed, over time, it can become a large issue that impacts on wider business outcomes. The Data Maturity programme we run with the Scottish public sector can help organisations understand what they want to achieve with data, where they are now, and how to set achievable outcomes.

A third cohort of the Data Maturity Project will take place in Autumn 2023 and will build on learning from the previous cohorts. The cohort projects are now designed in 4 phases, planning and ambition setting, research and engagement, assessment and findings, and final planning – with the aim of delivering a plan ready for implementation.

As our previous projects, and discussions with the wider public sector data community have identified, many organisations are at an early stage of data improvement journeys. The four foundations identified through the Data Maturity Project – Leadership, Data Governance, Data Strategy and Data Discovery – are where organisations want to focus (albeit alongside other data projects). As such, the foundations are the first pathways that are being developed in the DTF and we hope to test these with the third cohort.

The cohort participants will carry out data maturity assessments which help them to produce actionable and evidence-based next steps, supporting them in their journey to better use of data. In addition to this we will help participants with their ambition setting and will look to introduce the foundations as bite-size sessions early in the project. These will be delivered by expert speakers on topics such as Data Governance and Leadership. We will also invite previous cohort participants to meet the new cohort and offer some advice based on the work they are undertaking.

For public sector organisations interested in taking part in the next cohort (starting Autumn 2023) we will be holding an information session on the 28th June at 9.30am. To register please use this link: Data Maturity Cohort 3: information session Tickets, Wed 28 Jun 2023 at 09:30 | Eventbrite
