Last week, Danny Pendrey and Sarah Hughes from Marine Scotland Science met with Torry Community Council in Aberdeen to give a presentation on the marine litter clean-ups that they, and other colleagues, have been doing in Torry.

The key areas addressed in the meeting were identifying where the litter was coming from and looking at ways to improve things, going forward. It was clear that the majority of the rubbish appeared to becoming from the roadside above the shore, most likely from people in cars from all over, rather than directly from people living in Torry.

Some of the improvements that were discussed included:

  • Dog waste bins at the points where the paths down to the shore meet the roa
  • Bins that are not “open” in the car parks
  • Recycling facilities
  • Community warden patrols
  • Signage with respect to litter being dropped
  • Companies potentially sponsoring stretches of shore
  • Community Service Order people carrying out clean-ups
  • Keeping things going as a community even if we can no longer maintain effort
  • Joining in as a community – open invite for lunchtime clean-ups could be extended.

DMarine Litter Crew having a well deserved breakanny will also be meeting with a Senior City Warden from Aberdeen City Council to discuss what more can be done.

All of the volunteers (those working in the Marine Laboratory, Inverdee House and others) were commended for their actions, which was wee received.

So, as a little treat for all their hard work, they decided to take a break from the litter clearing to enjoy a picnic on the beach.

And yes – they cleared up after themselves!!
